"It can wait." It has become a fairly popular phrase, and almost anyone in the smartphone universe would recognize that as the universal slogan for "don't text and drive." Plenty of crashes and accidents have happened due to motorists being distracted by their phones while attempting to drive, and in fact, many places have pretty hefty fines for doing just that. However, new research may shed a little light on what has been taken as a given. A report out of Carnegie Mellon University and the London School of Economics and Political Science suggests that "talking on a cellphone while driving does... Read more...
Guess what? Push-to-talk is still alive, and well, apparently. While Sprint (and Nextel) and usually the companies tied to PTT services, it's AT&T connecting to this one. A new charter program will enable participants to experience new PTT communications, and in a world where everyone seems to be leaving the chirp behind, it's a strange goal to revert back and start up a new charter. The enhanced PTT solution trial, powered by Kodiak Networks Inc. InstaPoC technology, will harness AT&T's mobile broadband speeds, wireless network coverage, and broad portfolio of devices and the power of... Read more...
Technology created to prevent phone use while driving has been hanging around for years, but apparently, there are still quite a few issues to be worked out before it's completely viable. A couple of products in particular -- which are generally designed to disable a driver's cellphone in order to prevent calling and texting while switching lanes -- have been both lauded and criticized of late. Dallas-based WQN and Canada's Aegie Mobility have each concocted a solution that relies on GPS data in order to effectively disable moving cellphones. In essence, the GPS information feeds speed readings... Read more...

Tired of not knowing exactly who you're not talking to? Wired News has an interesting read on the latest way to ignore people on purpose: Caller ID everywhere. Today, with his elseed TiVo hack, Gardner can keep staring at the screen when the phone rings. The program ensures that caller ID information shows up on the TV. "You don't have to even get up to see if it's worth pausing the TiVo to answer the phone or not," said Gardner, a software engineer, acknowledging that in the four years since introducing the hack, he's been criticized... 50 years after the release of IBM's RAMAC(Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) drive, Hitachi is announcing their plans to release a Terabyte drive later this year. Some can argue that it's not a full Terabyte as in 1,024GB, but with 1,000GB it's closer than anything we have out now. If Seagate's 750GB drive just wasn't big enough for you, than it's time to step up to Hitachi. "It's not that big of a stretch for some hard drive makers. Hitachi already sells a 500GB drive, while rival Seagate Technology started... Read more...
