When Microsoft debuted its Surface Pro tablets, the devices seemed great--except for the eye-popping price tags--which is something that Microsoft eventually acknowledged by way of temporarily cutting the cost of the 64GB and 128GB Surface Pros by $100. (Microsoft also slashed the price of the Surface RT by $150.) Now, the Surface Pro price cut is permanent. The company told Neowin that the 64GB and 128GB versions will indeed henceforth cost $799 and $899 respectively. The 256GB version gets a $100 price cut, too. Further, Touch Covers will cost $40 less than before, so you can snag one for $79.... Read more...
Nearly one billion dollars. Even for a company as massive, powerful and entrenched as Microsoft, that sum is one that simply cannot be ignored. It just can't be brushed aside. And in the company's latest quarterly earnings, the $900 million charge that it took related to Surface RT inventory adjustments became the focal point. It was honestly hard to look at the company's revenues and profits; the only thing that most critics could focus on was that massive, massive charge. Can you blame them? Microsoft took center stage back in 2012 when it announced that it would begin shipping its own branded... Read more...
It appears the rumor that Microsoft was going to cut prices on its Surface RT tablets is true, at least to a certain extent; Staples is dropping the price of a 32GB Surface RT tablet a whopping $150 down to $350, if a leaked ad is to be believed. There was a rumor that a Touch Cover would be an additional $100 (which would also be a bit of a discount), bringing the total to $450, and a 64GB Surface RT would cost $450. The sale will begin on July 14th and run through the 20th. It’s hard to say if this will end up being permanent or if Staples is just trying to move some merchandise. Considering... Read more...
It appears that Microsoft is about to refresh its Surface RT hardware; according to Bloomberg, Microsoft has been testing versions of the Surface RT with Qualcomm Snapdragon chips inside instead of the NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoCs it’s been using thus far. This jibes with an earlier report that Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors would power Windows RT 8.1 tablets. The report says that in fact Microsoft will be rolling out new Surface RT tablets with Qualcomm SoCs inside while still offering some versions with the current Tegra 3. Ostensibly, the change will primarily serve to enable mobile broadband;... Read more...
Microsoft is expanding its Surface Pro offerings by releasing a 256GB Surface Pro in Japan on June 7th. That’s a fairly impressive amount of storage capacity, and coupled with the fact that the Surface Pro runs Windows 8 Pro (and with the Type Cover as an accessory), the device sounds a lot more like a super-thin notebook than a tablet. The rest of the specs sound attractive, too; there’s an Intel Core i5 chip inside with Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a pen input device included. Office Home & Business 2013 is included (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook), as... Read more...
