Recent comments made by the National Football League's highest paid player underscore the challenge Microsoft faces in promoting its Surface tablet line as not only a legitimate notebook replacement, but also a separate product from the iPad, which has come to represent the tablet market for the majority of mainstream users. Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler described the league-provided Surface Pro 2 tablets as "Knockoff iPads," according to a Twitter post by ESPN's Jon Greenberg. In a follow-up tweet, Greenberg added a bit of context by saying, "Cutler did say the Surface tablets work great.... Read more...
Turn that frown upside down, Surface Pro 2 owners, because Microsoft has begun serving up a firmware update that was intended to fix a number of issues a month ago. Unfortunately for Microsoft (and Surface Pro 2 owners), the original firmware had to be yanked offline last month after users reported issues with failed installations and, when successful, lower battery life. Users on Twitter and elsewhere on the web report receiving the revised firmware over the weekend, and this time around, there haven't been any problems installing it. Microsoft seems to be doling out the update in chunks, as some... Read more...
We've said before that we think Microsoft might be onto something with its second generation Surface systems. Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 are thinner, lighter, faster, and more feature-rich than the first generation Surface tablets, and though we'll reserve final judgement until we're able to formally review these devices, what we saw during Microsoft's unveiling was pretty impressive. Surface Pro 2 is the newest device to get the teardown treatment from iFixIt. Things... Read more...
If you're rooting for Microsoft to succeed (and really, why wouldn't you?), then keep your fingers crossed that its mobile strategy is starting to work. That's what the Redmond outfit would have you believe, hence a call out to developers to get on the ball building apps because, wouldn't you know it, the company's recently introduced Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 inventory is nearly depleted. "Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 are close to selling out. All those buyers are gonna need apps. Your move: developer.microsoft.com," Microsoft tweeted on Friday. We hope sales of Microsoft's second generation... Read more...
Microsoft's Corporate VP of Surface, Panos Panay had his work cut out for him at the company's Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 launch event on Monday. Microsoft needed compelling product demos to showcase their new hardware against the current backdrop of stiff competition of alternative platforms and products from Google and Apple.  So, obviously, the first thing they did was call upon their old friend Intel way back at the design stage, empowering their Surface Pro 2 slate with a dual-core Haswell 4th generation Core i5-4200U processor. The Surface 2 Pro is essentially a hybrid tablet-notebook... Read more...
