"Steamboxes" are a dime a dozen, but MAINGEAR has done well to craft some of the most exquisite, jaw-dropping options. In fact, where its new DRIFT is concerned, the company says that it's not only fully customizable, but also "devastatingly powerful". Perfect! While it's called an "ultra-compact" PC, MAINGEAR hasn't gone out of its way to make the DRIFT as small as possible. Instead, it's aimed to make it small without sacrificing performance. Under the hood of this baby, you can have Intel's top-end Core i7-4790K, as well as NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 980 or AMD's Radeon R9 290X. Like all good Steamboxes,... Read more...
For years, gamers have wondered when Valve might debut a new version of its Source engine and next-generation games built to run on it. Now, we may have answer to that, thanks to leaked screenshots of what appears to be a rebuilt version of the classic Plantation level. If true, it represents an enormous step forward for the venerable Source engine, which debuted 10 years ago. While it's been upgraded several times, Valve has now used the core of the engine to power more titles than it built around the classic Half Life engine (itself based on Quake code). How big a jump? From this: To this: Obviously... Read more...
We’ve all been eagerly anticipating the presumed launch of Valve’s Steam Box gaming console since last spring and especially after there was some buzz (and ultimately, misinformation) about the device at CES this year, but now it appears as though Valve is finally going to debut the device on Monday. The company put up a teaser site that reads, “The Steam universe is expanding in 2014”. Beyond that, all the site says is, “Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads. This year we’ve been working... Read more...
It's not a question of if there's a Steambox on the horizon, but when and for how much. How does right now and under $1,000 float your boat? Xi3 Corporation is now accepting pre-orders for its "Piston Console" PC, otherwise known as the Steambox, or at least one version of it (with Valve playing it coy, it's entirely possible other PC makers might build their own versions of the Steambox). The Piston starts at $1,000 though there's a $100 discount for anyone who places a pre-order between now and the end of SXSW 2013, which concludes on Sunday, March 17th. Xi3 is expecting these things to sell... Read more...
Earlier, we came across a hot item about Valve and their rumored Steam Box gaming console. Word came out that modular PC maker Xi3 was Valve’s hardware partner on the project and was showing off the result, a beautifully designed computer called the Piston. However, when we eagerly scooted over to Valve’s booth here at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, they told us that the story simply was not true. According to Valve, there are several--potential--hardware partners, and in fact that’s pretty much all Valve’s booth is for at CES; press wasn’t allowed in. When we pushed a bit... Read more...
Recent job postings at Valve and comments by the company have sparked a great deal of speculation on the company's long-term plans for a Linux-powered gaming console. In a recent interview, Jeri Ellsworth, one of Valve's R&D engineers, shed some light on what the company is working on. Thus far, the company's efforts have been focused on recruitment and brainstorming, but Valve's long-term goal is to "Make Steam games more fun to play in your living room." Devoid of context, that's the sort of meaningless statement business CEOs are fond of making, but as Ellsworth told Engadget, that's the... Read more...
