When traveling, it can be a bit of a nuisance to boot one’s laptop and wait for it to load the OS and connect to the Internet, just to check a quick email or two before a flight. Soon, we may be able to have this same functionality, but without the wait: Phoenix Technologies and Opera Software have partnered to bring the Opera Browser to the HyperSpace platform as a way of delivering instant-on access to the Internet.Hyperspace is a compact Linux environment that runs independently beside a system's core OS. Like Asus' Express Gate, Hyperspace provides access to instant-on applications. Because... Read more...
In a unanimous 5-0 decision, the FCC late Tuesday approved public access to the "white spaces" of the wireless spectrum. "White space" in telecommunications refers to unused frequencies in the radio waves portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the FCC's decision followed months of lobbying by Google, Microsoft, and other Wireless Innovation Alliance (WIA) members for the measure and by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) against it. The NAB has stated that using "white space" will cause interference with wireless devices of many types, such as wireless microphones and the like.We ... Read more...
Media corporations have been fighting the battle to regain control of their content for years. They’ve sent out countless DMCA notices, but it seems as soon as they succeed in taking down one video clip, five more have already appeared. A quick glance at sites like YouTube or MySpace reveals countless videos that were published without proper authorization. Now, instead of sending removal requests, MTV can earn money from its online videos thanks to Auditude. Auditude will identify video clips that are uploaded to MySpace from a number of shows produced by MTV, and will display an overlay when... Read more...
MySpace Music was expected to be successful, but this successful? It was launched at 12 AM EDT on Sept. 25th, and despite that short period of time, it has already streamed over a billion songs (and yes, we have contributed to that streaming). In comparison, (though obviously not fair as iTunes is a pay service, while MySpace Music streams for free) it took Apple nearly 3 years, from April 28, 2003 to February 23, 2006, for its one billionth music download. MySpace hasn't provided info such as username, song played or the like, but it did say the following: We’re extremely pleased with the launch... Read more...
What do you know?  The fourth time is the charm, at least for the Falcon 1 two-stage SpaceX rocket.  This was the fourth flight of the rocket, and it became the first commercial space vehicle to reach earth orbit. Elon Musk, CEO and CTO of SpaceX, who made his fortune as co-founder of PayPal prior to starting this space venture, said: "This is a great day for SpaceX and the culmination of an enormous amount of work by a great team. The data shows we achieved a super precise orbit insertion—middle of the bull's-eye — and then went on to coast and restart the second stage, which was... Read more...
Either these hospital workers have a strange fetish or ... well, we actually can't think of an alternative. Two University of New Mexico Hospital employees were fired after it was discovered that they have been posting photos of patients' injuries to MySpace. The workers were using their cell phone cameras. A hospital supervisor received an anonymous tip about them on Tuesday and launched an inquiry. The MySpace page could only be accessed by the employee's MySpace friends, as the profile was set to private, a small measure of comfort. Additionally, the identifying features of the patients were... Read more...
You probably remember the Megan Meier case, in which a teenage girl committed suicide after a MySpace romance went bad. The romance itself and the boy involved were in fact fictional, perpetrated as a vindictive prank by the mother of a former friend who lived down the street.A Missouri woman who prosecutors say drove a 13-year-old neighbour girl to suicide with a cruel MySpace hoax pleaded innocent to federal charges on Thursday in the unprecedented case. Lori Drew, who is accused of creating the fake MySpace persona of a 16-year-old boy to woo and then viciously reject neighbour Megan Meier,... Read more...
Don't worry, Rupert (Murdoch); MySpace still outdraws Facebook in terms of unique U.S. visitors. But in terms of worldwide visitors: second place.comScore statistics indicate that Facebook drew even with MySpace in April.  At that point, the networks interested about 115 million users each.  If we're allowed mentally to extend the growth lines through today, Facebook's likely closer to 120 million, and MySpace has almost undoubtedly been left behind.Keep an eye out for official global "nail in the coffin" reports, then.  Since different research firms come up with varying figures,... Considering that News Corp. owns both MySpace and The New York Post, this is probably pretty reliable info.MySpace's plan to launch a digital-music joint venture with the major record companies is picking up steam, as the social networking giant nears deals with Sony BMG and Warner Music Group, multiple sources familiar with the situation told The Post. The agreements could be signed as soon as this week. The service is expected to launch later this year. BTW, since Universal Music and MySpace have an ongoing copyright infringement lawsuit, don't expect a deal to be signed between those two anytime... Who would have thought that gangs would eventually be recruiting new members on social networking sites such as MySpace?San Mateo Police Chief Susan Manheimer, who speaks for the San Mateo County gang task force, said gang leaders are aware that kids like to socialize on sites such as MySpace and YouTube. "We're seeing our gangs and the resurgence of some of the gang members coming back from prison looking more and more to those middle schoolers and the younger kids to recruit them," said Manheimer. We have to wonder just how tough these new recruits might be versus those that came from backgrounds... Seattle has been a boomtown a half-a-dozen times over the years. Looks like it is again. The entrepreneurs of the digital age seemed to have settled on the Seattle area as the next big thing - the overcast version of Silicon Valley.   “The Seattle start-up ecosystem is vibrant, and growing rapidly,” said Oren Etzioni, an artificial-intelligence expert at the University of Washington and a serial technology entrepreneur. The University of Washington, in fact, is one of the big draws. It is fostering the entrepreneurial climate here the way Stanford University does in Silicon Valley. Another... Read more...
There's been a lot of interest among users, the media, and potential investors about social networks like MySpace, Facebook, and others recently. But there seems to be one class of people losing interest very quickly in social networks: advertisers. There was a time when Mark Seremet considered MySpace one of the best things to happen to his business. Seremet, then-CEO of customized clothing company Spreadshirt, saw sales jump sixfold in late 2005 and early 2006 after he ran ads on the popular social networks MySpace and Facebook. "Somebody would get the shirt, then tell a friend," Seremet says.... Read more...
Do you ever get that feeling that all day you're just taking one step forward, two steps back?  How about that uncanny sort of chill that goes down your spine when you're skulking in late from a night out with the boys, only to realize that your wife or significant other really isn't asleep, she's faking it and your dog-breath, over-indulged, wretchedness won't slide past her, even if you paid her handsomely.  Well, it could just be that you haven't yet mastered all time, space and dimension yet, young Jedi.  Grand Poo-Baa of all the smart guys in history, Albert Einstein... The Megan Meier MySpace case, in which Megan committed suicide after a MySpace hoax committed by no less than an adult, has caused a Missouri community to craft a law to prevent something from this from happening again, at least without some punishment for the perpetrators. The goal of the ordinance, said Assistant City Attorney John Young, is to punish people who use threatening or obscene language or images through electronic communication to inflict emotional distress on another person. Young said he researched similar legislation in other cities and states in drafting the ordinance.Megan Meier... Read more...
