Don't tell Qualcomm that 64-bit computing in the mobile world is a "gimmick" (more on that in a moment). Not only does Qualcomm feel the opposite is true, but the company just introduced its Snapdragon 410 chipset with integrated 4G LTE World Mode. The Snapdragon 410 is built using 28nm process technology and is Qualcomm's first 64-bit part. Qualcomm's former chief marketing officer, Anand Chandrasekher, was moved to a new position in October a month after making disparaging comments about Apple's A7 SoC (System-on-Chip). MediaTek on Wednesday announced what it claims is the world's first heterogeneous computing SoC (System-on-Chip) with a scalable eight-core processor for improved multi-tasking performance, more multimedia muscle, and excellent performance per watt. Dubbed "MT6592," MediaTek is billing its chip as the first true octa-core mobile platform. Built using a 28nm HPM high-performance manufacturing process, the MT6592 has eight CPU cores, each of which is capable of running at up to 2GHz. Apple's new A7 SoC that sits at the heart of the iPad Air and iPhone 5S is a fast chip. Benchmarks and analysis have shown that it picks up its additional performance over the older A6 thanks to a mixture of architectural tweaks and, in some cases, its new 64-bit architecture. On average, the gains are split about 60/40 between the two areas, with more performance gains from the microarchitecture enhancements. A few weeks back we gave you a first-hand look at the performance of Intel's new low power Bay Trail Atom System-On-A-Chip for tablets and hybrid devices. NVIDIA is holding a tech event currently in Montreal to showcase a number of the tools and technologies the company has developed to foster state of the art in game development. The event will be taking place over the next two days and we’re told there will be a number of newsworthy items revealed. The story around AMD's upcoming Kaveri continues to evolve, but it's increasingly clear that the chip won't be available for retail purchase this year. If you recall, AMD initially promised that Kaveri would be available during 2013 and even published roadmaps earlier in May that show the chip shipping in the beginning of the fourth quarter. This was always surprising, but AMD adamantly stuck to the published roadmap and the Q4 2013 availability. Or at least, they did. A few weeks ago, the analyst company ABI Research published a report claiming that Intel's new CloverTrail+ platform (dual-core Medfield) for smartphones was significantly faster and more power efficient than anything ARM's various partners were shipping. If you follow the smartphone market, that was a very surprising claim. Medfield was a decent midrange platform when it launched in 2012, but Intel made it clear that it's goal for Medfield was to compete with other platforms in its division -- not seize the performance crown outright. At the Intel Developers Forum currently underway in Beijing, Intel revealed a number of details regarding future Atom and Xeon processors and proposed server and rack-level enhancements to improve efficiency and ease upgrades moving forward.
