Where DIY PC boards are concerned, Raspberry Pi was an undeniable spearhead. As soon as the original unit came out, a flurry of competitors came to the surface, each with their own little twist. When Apple debuted its A8 SoC, it proved to be a modest tweak of the original A7. Despite packing double the transistors and an improved GPU, the heart of the A8 SoC is the same dual-core Apple "Cyclone" processor tweaked to run at higher clock speeds and with stronger total GPU performance. Given this, many expected that the Apple A8X would be cut from similar cloth -- a higher clock speed, perhaps, and a larger GPU, but not much more than that. It appears those projections were wrong. Apple knows better than to cut off its nose to spite its face, as the saying goes, hence why it still contracts Samsung to build the custom System-on-Chips (SoCs) that end up in iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad. Will that relationship continue between these two bitter rivals? It would appear so, based on comments made by Kim Ki-nam, present of Samsung's semiconductor business. The trickle-down effect has applied to technology for some time, but this feels more rapid than usual. Just a few years after LTE was introduced, and reserved only for flagship phones, Qualcomm has introduced a new SoC that could bring LTE access to millions of new users. The new Snapdragon 200 tier (namely the Snapdragon 210), will offer integrated multimode 3G/4G LTE and LTE Dual SIM for entry-level smartphones. Applied Micro is betting big on microserver use in the HPC market, and to help things along, it's just begun shipping its new X-Gene processors, based on ARM's v8 64-bit architecture. In late June, the firm revealed a number of partners that would be shipping servers with its X-Gene chip inside, and one similarity amongst them all is that they also bundle in NVIDIA Tesla GPU accelerators. These APUs are the successors to last year’s Temash and Kabini APUs, which powered an array of small form factor and mobile platforms. Don't tell Qualcomm that 64-bit computing in the mobile world is a "gimmick" (more on that in a moment). Not only does Qualcomm feel the opposite is true, but the company just introduced its Snapdragon 410 chipset with integrated 4G LTE World Mode. The Snapdragon 410 is built using 28nm process technology and is Qualcomm's first 64-bit part. Qualcomm's former chief marketing officer, Anand Chandrasekher, was moved to a new position in October a month after making disparaging comments about Apple's A7 SoC (System-on-Chip). MediaTek on Wednesday announced what it claims is the world's first heterogeneous computing SoC (System-on-Chip) with a scalable eight-core processor for improved multi-tasking performance, more multimedia muscle, and excellent performance per watt. Dubbed "MT6592," MediaTek is billing its chip as the first true octa-core mobile platform. Built using a 28nm HPM high-performance manufacturing process, the MT6592 has eight CPU cores, each of which is capable of running at up to 2GHz. Apple's new A7 SoC that sits at the heart of the iPad Air and iPhone 5S is a fast chip. Benchmarks and analysis have shown that it picks up its additional performance over the older A6 thanks to a mixture of architectural tweaks and, in some cases, its new 64-bit architecture. On average, the gains are split about 60/40 between the two areas, with more performance gains from the microarchitecture enhancements. A few weeks back we gave you a first-hand look at the performance of Intel's new low power Bay Trail Atom System-On-A-Chip for tablets and hybrid devices. Bay Trail, the follow-on to Intel's Clover Trail Atom design, comes in both dual and quad-core variants and offers better overall performance-per-watt than the previous generation and a significantly most robust graphics engine.  At the time, we only got our hands on a few prototype devices and Intel was still tuning drivers getting the solution ready for prime time.
