Intel is still keeping a number of details regarding its complete Skylake microarchitecture and product line-up under wraps for a few more weeks, but at a public session at IDF, some of the key technologies and design updates introduced with Skylake were discussed.During the session, Julius Mandelblat, Senior Principal Engineer at Intel, talked about changes to the CPU core in Skylake, along with some improvements made to the interconnects and memory interface, power and thermal characteristics, and platform level enhancements. In case you haven't been following the news surrounding Intel's Skylake launch, be advised that the chip maker is not bundling a cooling solution with its recently announced Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K processors, both of which are unlocked parts. However, Intel will sell a retail heatsink and fan combination separately, and it looks to be a rather decent one. We can sense your skepticism, and truth be told, we don't blame you. Lenovo expanded its ThinkPad line this week with the ThinkPad P Series of mobile workstations. The new line will include Lenovo’s highest-performing ThinkPad mobile workstations, edging the ThinkPad W series out of that spot. When you think about what constitutes a "mobile workstation," several things come to mind. Although Intel is holding many of the architectural details regarding its latest Skylake-based, 6th generation Core processors back until the Intel Developers Forum goes down in San Francisco in a couple of weeks, the company is announcing a pair of new processors and a companion chipset today. On account of the fact that Intel's 5th-gen Core processors still haven't hit the desktop, it's quite something to realize that Skylake, the 6th-gen, is right around the corner. Marco talked a bit about Broadwell's desktop counterpart early last month, and overall, it's worth looking forward to. Does that mean you'll want to upgrade from Haswell? Almost certainly not. While it's undoubtedly going to offer some nice benefits over Haswell, with good help from its shrink to 14nm, Skylake is really going to be the "big one". This morning at the Intel Developers Conference in San Francisco, Intel PC Client Group Vice President Kirk Skaugen offered a live demo of "Skylake," the follow-on to the company's Broadwell processor platform.  Set for launch before the end of 2015, the platform is claimed to offer significant battery life gains for 2-in-1 hybrids and tablets. Intel’s Skylake processors won’t launch for some time (the company still needs to release Broadwell at some point, which won’t be out until sometime next year at the earliest), but according to a leaked roadmap slide, we can see some juicy details about Skylake. The chips will be built on Intel's 14nm process node (which we’ll see first on Haswell-E processors), and they’ll also feature AVX 3.2.
