Location-based apps and gaming is surely the "next big thing," and Sony looks to be riding that wave right along. The company, along with Skyhook, has this week announced that Skyhook's Core Engine will be embedded in the next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP) from Sony Computer Entertainment. Location-based services just might be the buzzword of the hour, and as mobile communications grow, we think this will become more and more the rule rather than the exception. Location-based apps aren't uncommon to find these days; in fact, we'd say most social networking apps are already location-enabled, and more and more apps are picking up on the trend. While privacy is obviously an issue, those who "opt-in" stand to gain a whole new level of functionality by allowing an app to know their location. One of the biggest issues that still plague phones and navigation devices that are equipped with GPS chips is indoor reception.
