The follow-up to the hugely successful Skyfall (the film raked in $1.1 billion worldwide) has received an official name: Spectre. Spectre will focus on the SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion, the global terror organization that James Bond has battled in previous films including Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Daniel Craig is of course reprising his role as James Bond (007) and we shall see the return of other characters introduced in Skyfall including Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Miss Moneypenny), and Ben Wishaw... That cool, creepy abandoned island fortress from the latest James Bond movie “Skyfall”? That wasn’t a movie set. It’s a real place called Battleship Island, and it’s located off the coast of Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan. And Google sent a couple of employees (who we presume have nerves of steel) to the uninhabited island to map it for Google Maps Street View. Battleship Island (real name: “Hashima”) was once a busy coal mining facility and housed some 5,000 people. The latest in the Bond film series, "Skyfall," was certainly one to remember. And not all of those memories were pleasant. The head villain's island lair was a particularly spooky place, and sure enough, it's roots are grown from a real place. The decaying wasteland depicted in the film was a shadow of Hashima off the coast of Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan. Due to its unique flat shape, the island is most widely known in Japan by its nickname Gunkanjima — aka “Battleship Island.” In some circles, it's called "Dead Island."
