The answer of course is Intel's upcoming Itanium brand CPU codenamed Tukwila. While we tend to focus a lot of our attention on the desktop market, we cannot help but be impressed by server CPUs when we hear figures like 2 billion transistors or 30 MB of on-die cache that make up a good portion of those transistors.  “The new Itanium processor will be built on the company’s 65-nanometer manufacturing process and will also be one of the first Intel chips to use the company’s QuickPath interconnect technology—an integrated memory controller. (Advanced Micro Devices already uses an integrated memory... Read more...
At the time of NVIDIA's 3-Way SLI launch, we were unable to bring you Crysis benchmark numbers that we felt comfortable with.  This was partly an NVIDIA driver issue and also because we were waiting on a patch from Crytek that would allow for more efficient SLI scaling overall.  With the release of the Cyrsis 1.1 patch, we now have a stable, scalable platform with which to test on....   From the article - "At high quality settings and 1920X1200 resolution, the GeForce 8800 Ultra SLI setup is about 50% faster than a single card.  Three GeForce 8800 Ultras in 3-Way SLI... It's Christmas Day. What the heck are you doing? Fire up Crysis and install this new Christmas present from them: an official Crysis Tournament Mappack. Thing is, Santa didn't drop it down the chimney and it's not on the Crytek site (at least, it's not easy to find). In a way that's probably good: anyone else annoyed at how you have to enter your birthdate every single time you go there?Of course we have prepared a little Christmas present for you as well. Within the past few months and weeks we haven't been working on patches, SDK and Linux Server only, but also our Level Designers have been very... Read more...
The team at InCrysis had a bit of a heart to heart with Crytek CEO, Cevat Yerli and NVIDIA's VP of Content Relations, Roy Taylor, in sort of a state-of-the-nation fashoin that offers a bit of insight as to what's going on with game play, the engine itself and performance optimizations that both companies are working hard on.  There is also talk of the forthcoming patch for the game that was promised long ago but now has been projected for release by Cevat in the "7 - 14 day" range.  There are also a lot of great tid-bits of information regarding the game and how it taxes your hardware,... It's not like you can see it by looking at the case of iPod or PC, but without the transistor, we would have none of the "magic" electronic devices we now know and cannot live without.Shockley had continued his semiconductor work, and in 1948 patented the modern junction transistor. Three years later, Bell Labs demonstrated part number M1752, though it was apparently produced only in prototype quantities. The modern transistor was born. But it didn't immediately revolutionize the electronics industry, which continued its love affair with tubes. It wasn't till 1956 that Japan's ETL Mark 3, probably... Read more...
Due to popular demand, we've gone ahead and updated our GeForce 8800 GT launch article with a full suite of Crysis benchmark numbers and even a few screen shots to dress it up a bit.  The game engine alone with this upcoming release will live up to the hype that surrounds it.  Word is Crysis has gone gold and will be on sale in stores 11/16.  If you're one generation behind in graphics cards, now might be a good time to consider the new GeForce 8800 GT or if you can stand it, perhaps wait for its successor, which is rumored to hit some time in early '08.  From the article, as... This year's Nobel Prize in Physics has gone to two scientists who discovered "giant magnetoresistance." If that doesn't ring  a bell, it should. It's the method used to read and write information on high density hard disks. Albert Fert of France and Peter Grunberg of Germany share the 1.5 million dollar prize, and get to hang the neat medal up with their bowling trophies. This phenomenon is where weak changes in magnetic resistance give rise to big differences in electrical resistance. This is one of the core principles that allows for the development of sensitive reading tools for retrieving... Read more...
