Ken Brill at Forbes does a little arithmetic to examine the true cost of running a server, and the numbers are a bit of a surprise. Since we're in the midst of something of a boom in data center construction, shouldn't someone be figuring out what they really cost before they buy a bunch of servers and roll out the plans? For the month of May, comScore reports that U.S. users watched over 12 billion videos over the Internet--a 45 percent increase in the number of videos viewed online a year ago. Not surprisingly, YouTube garnered the lion's share with almost 35 percent of May's videos viewed online--that's roughly 4.1 billion YouTube videos watched just in the month of May."Nearly 142 million U.S. Internet users watched an average of 85 videos per viewer in May. Ever lose your saved games? Frustrating, right? On Thursday Valve Software announced a solution, the Steam Cloud.  It will be an an upcoming update to their Steam download service and it will not only store saved games, but also graphics settings, and key binding in the "cloud," or server-side.The biggest news is that game-generated data will now be stored with your Steam accounts in Valve servers. Hewlett Packard announced its new blade setup today, and the ProLiant BL2X220c G5 is something of a breakthrough. HP has been able to put two servers into one blade, cutting energy consumption and shrinking the space needed down on the server farm. The two servers are completely independent of each other, but share the same shell. That setup allows the BL2×220c G5 to offer 60 percent better performance per watt than similar configurations.
