MicroSDHC. It's a card within the popular Secure Digital family, but it's one you don't hear about very often. It's extremely small, smaller than a thumbnail, and they're generally quite expensive and only useful for cellphone owners. You see, most MicroSDHC card slots are found on mobile phones, where a small card is needed to boost storage capacity on a small device. SDXC is the next generation of the long-standing Secure Digital memory card format, which has become quite popular and pervasive over the past few years. SDXC was initially announced at CES 2009, and it has taken over a year for the first cards (from Panasonic) to ship to consumers. One of the touted features of iPhone OS 3.0 was the ability to interface with external hardware, and one company has used that to fill a gap in the iPhone's feature set. The company, zoomMediaPlus, has announced zoomIt, an adapter that allows iPhones to read SD cards (and with adapters, mini and micro SD cards).zoomMedia is taking pre-orders right now. The price is a relatively high $59.95, but the company will ship a free 4GB Kingston SDHC card to the first 250 customers as well as a limited time $10 discount. Lexar is improving upon its Professional line of CompactFlash (CF) and Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards by adding larger CF cards and faster SDHC cards. The capacity of the Professional 300x CF cards has been increased to 32GB; Lexar's Professional 233x CF cards are now available in 16GB and 32GB capacities. In the SDHC realm, the Lexar Professional 133x SDHC card has achieved a Class 10 speed rating, enabling it to provide a minimum sustained write speed capability of 133x (20MB per second). We've already heard of SDXC--in fact, it's a format that was announced almost a year ago now--but we've really seen nothing to make us believe it (or the technology behind it) was ready for primetime. That's exactly what SanDisk believes, as its newest memory card lineup targets gamers who actually think a specially labeled flash card will work best in their new handheld. Toshiba announced the launch of the world’s first 64GB SDXC memory card that is capable of operating at the world's fastest data transfer rate for reading and writing to a flash memory card. Micron Technology announced the mass production of new NAND flash memory products using a 34-nanometer process technology. In coordination with the announcement, Lexar, a subsidiary of Micron, announced plans to take advantage of the new 34nm NAND products by offering a range of flash memory cards and USB flash drives that use the technology.Micron’s newly architected 32Gb multi-level cell (MLC) NAND chip is 17% smaller than the company’s first-generation 32Gb chip. Panasonic announced plans to launch the world’s first Class 10 series of SDHC cards in Europe and other markets at the end of this month. Class 10 is a new speed specification developed by the SD Card Association.
