There’s a lot of positive energy flowing through Microsoft these days. The company by all accounts won E3 with the unveil of a new 1TB Xbox One console, a swanky new “Elite” wireless Xbox One controller, and backwards compatibility support for Xbox 360 games. And we can’t forget the July 29 release of Windows 10, which is the highly anticipated follow-up to Windows 8.1. However, there are also a few dark clouds heading towards Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington headquarters and they are zeroing in on the company’s smartphone division. Microsoft today announced another round of job cuts, this time... Read more...
No company ever announces job cuts by saying, “We’re scuttling thousands of jobs, and that sucks, but that’s business”. Microsoft’s version of tap-dancing around the nasty business of layoffs is an email from CEO Satya Nadella titled “Starting to Evolve Our Organization and Culture” wherein he announced that the company will cut some 18,000 jobs from its workforce over the next year, which is a move that we expected. Calling it “The first step to building the right organization for our ambitions is to realign our workforce”, Nadella said that... Read more...
New Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has his work cut out for him. Although Microsoft is still one of the most important tech companies in the world, the company’s dominance is slipping as technology evolves rapidly. The company’s old product paradigms simply don’t work anymore, and Microsoft has appeared out of touch and confused at times when it comes to key areas such as mobile and the not-quite-right and relatively unpopular Windows 8 operating system. Nadella sent a lengthy (really, really lengthy) memo to all Microsoft employees espousing his values for the company moving forward,... Read more...
New Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced some leadership changes at the company this morning, and the Xbox area has a new chief in Phil Spencer. Spencer was formerly head of Microsoft Studios, and he’ll maintain that role and subsume the responsibilities of leading the whole Xbox crew--including the Xbox, Xbox Live, Xbox Music, and Xbox Video teams. Spencer will report to Terry Myerson, the executive VP of operating systems, and thus Microsoft is keeping Xbox development and OS development cozy. “Combining all our software, gaming and content assets across the Xbox team under a single... After much speculation and a churning rumor mill, Microsoft has named Satya Nadella as its third CEO, effective immediately. The only other two people to sit in the big chair at Microsoft have been Bill Gates himself and Steve Ballmer. “During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” said Gates. “Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together. His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the... Read more...
Ever since Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced his retirement in August, the company has been busily hunting for a new head honcho, and according to a Reuters report, among those on the shortlist are Nokia’s Stephen Elop, Ford CEO Alan Mulally, and three other external candidates whose names could not be determined. In addition to those five, there are at least three names from within Microsoft’s own ranks that are options for the big chair, including Tony Bates, former Skype CEO who is now in charge of Microsoft’s business development, and Satya Nadella, who runs Microsoft’s...
