Kanex's mySpot sure looks a lot like Asus' newest product -- or, should say that the other way around? Whatever the case, it appears that the travel-friendly router is sure getting smaller, with Asus' new WL-330NUL USB pocket router being the latest on the block. It's a tiny, tiny device, with an Ethernet jack on one end and a flip-out USB connector on the other. Essentially, you simply plug a live Ethernet cable in, connect the USB end to either your laptop or a power port, and watch as a Wi-Fi network is created. The dongle supports 802.11b/g/n, and it should ship around a month from now. Unfortunately,... Read more...
If there's one industry that could seriously use a disruption, it's the world of ISPs. Yes, we have options, but too few -- in some locales, none at all. FreedomPop has been trying to shake things up for some time on the mobile front, but now the company has started to accept limited pre-orders for its new home wireless broadband modem scheduled to launch next month. What makes it different than every other router? Reportedly, it'll provide "100 percent free high-speed Internet in the home or small office at speeds faster than typical DSL and on par with most cable providers." FreedomPop Hub Burst... When it comes to getting Wi-Fi strewn across huge areas, your options have historically been a little limited. Most routers needed specific range extenders in order to work together, and the universal solutions were fairly huge. But now, D-Link has introduced the Wireless Range Extender (DAP-1320), which functions with any router you have in order to extend the range of your wireless access point. It's barely larger than an AC outlet plug, and is ideal for pushing wireless signals to those hard-to-reach areas – eliminating Wi-Fi dead zones and broadening the range of a wireless network for... The first wave of devices supporting the 802.11ac standard is still coming, and Western Digital is now part of it with its announcement of the My Net AC1300 router and My Net AC WiFi Bridge. As you might expect, the routers offers both 802.11ac on the 5GHz band and 802.11n on the 2.4GHz bands, and the My Net AC1300 is further bolstered by WD’s FasTrack technology, which prioritizes network traffic to deliver optimal performance for applications such as streaming video. The router has four Gigabit Ethernet ports and two USB 2.0 ports, which are ideal for connecting external storage, and the... Read more...
We thought we saw the last of extraordinary long rabbit ears when flat panel televisions supplanted bulky CRTs and cable/satellite service became ubiquitous. Boy, were we wrong. They're back, and they're the secret sauce in Asus' recipe for a wireless router, access point, and range extender all rolled into one device. The new Asus RT-N12HP is that device, and it purportedly offers up to 300 percent wider wireless coverage compared to standard N300 routers. Getting that kind of range required a custom hardware architecture augmented with detachable 9dBi high-gain antennas and a discrete signal... Read more...
Despite the fact that 802.11ac products have barely even penetrated the market up to this point, we now have another standard to keep our eyes on: 802.11ad. No, that's not some odd date format talking about the year 802, but rather an upcoming wireless standard that's said to be more revolutionary than evolutionary - the latter of which 802.11ac is. Due in 2014, the 802.11ad standard will open up a new band, 60GHz, which will allow for transmission speeds far greater than the typical home network will offer - up to 7Gbit/s. It's important to note; that's just a theoretical maximum, and... Read more...

Quick! What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Western Digital? If you're like most people, you immediately thought of hard drives and other storage products, which have been WD's bread and butter for several decades now. But the times, they are a changin', and in case you haven't noticed, Western Digital is no longer content to simply take residence in your PC. That became evident when Western Digital dove into the media player market with its WD TV line-up of set-top boxes, but why stop at owning the living room when you can lord over the entire manor? Unable to come up... Read more...

A couple of weeks ago, Cisco launched Cisco Connect Cloud, a cloud platform for Linksys Smart WiFi routers that was designed to make setting up and using the router much simpler and more user-friendly and included a convenient mobile app and third-party apps that offered enhanced functionality such as easy streaming to smart TVs. Suffice it to say that however Cisco expected the early returns on the platform to go, it was not expecting the amount of blowback it received; apparently, not everyone wants to be forced into opting in to a cloud service, especially one that contained the following in... The networking giant has just introduced two new routers -- Cloud Routers -- the Cloud Router 1200 (DIR-636L) and Cloud Router 2000 (DIR-826L), supporting speeds of up to 300 Mbps and 600 Mbps, respectively. Both routers include mydlink Cloud Services for easy management and configuration from anywhere via free smart phone apps. Additionally, these routers include a USB port that works with the free SharePort mobile app to enable users to share and enjoy photos, music, and movie files from a range of connected... Home automation sort of feels like a lost art. It's popular, yes, but only in high-end homes, generally speaking. Even Google tried to push it mainstream last year with the introduction of Android@Home, but alas, it was mostly a nonstarter. Now, Belkin is dipping its toes into the game with WeMo. It's a line of modular, Wi-Fi-based products that turn an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch into a remote control for household devices. Consisting of two initial products, the WeMo Switch and the WeMo Motion, WeMo works with the free WeMo app to create a scalable, customizable home control system. The WeMo... Read more...
