After successful launch of their initial E and C-Series Accelerated Processing Units for low-power and mobile platforms, AMD is ready with its first refreshes of the E and C-Series product lines. Being announced today are new flaghship and mid-range E-Series parts along with a new top-end C-Series chip. The new AMD E-450 supplants the E-350 at the top of the E-Series line-up. The E-450 is a dual-core chip with an 18W TDP and a max CPU clock speed of 1.65GHz—a 50MHz increase over the E-350. The E-450’s GPU block also gets a boot to 600MHz (max) / 508MHz (base), up from the... Read more...
According to industry tipsters, Apple is planning on releasing an updated iMac next week.  Other than that details are somewhat sketchy, but here's what we do know: "Apple is known to be developing a Penryn-based refresh of both the iMac and its Mac mini cousin for the spring, delivering the cooler-running and faster processors to systems that haven't been updated since August of 2007." We wouldn't be surprised if Apple also included a higher end graphics option for the high end models.... Read more...
When AMD launched the RV670 GPU at the heart of the ATI Radeon HD 3870 and 3850 series of products, they received quite a bit of fanfare due to the product's  competitive prices, strong performance, and more manageable power profiles.  One of the main reasons AMD was able to bring the Radeon HD 3870 and 3850 to market with these attributes was because the company had migrated their GPUs to a relatively more advanced 55nm process technology.  Manufacturing the GPUs at 55nm meant they were more economical to produce, required less power than the previous generation, and could... NVIDIA’s G80 GPU has been sitting atop the 3D graphics food chain for well over a year now.  It was way back in November of ’06 that the GeForce 8800 GTX and original 640MB GTS arrived – the first two graphics cards based on the G80 GPU.  Sometime later, the more affordable 320MB GeForce 8800 GTS and current flagship GeForce 8800 Ultra arrived, but these two cards are based on the same GPU that powers NVIDIA’s initial 8800-series offerings. Obviously, even though NVIDIA’s products still clearly outperform ATI’s at the high-end, it’s time for a refresh, if just to keep things exciting... Read more...
Although there has obviously been a lot going on behind the scenes at ATI these last few months, i.e. the proposed AMD merger, the company has remained relatively quiet.  The last major graphics card launch was for the Radeon X1900 family back in January.  And since then, the company has released only a couple of mid-range graphics cards that utilized existing GPU technology.  Today, however, ATI is announcing five new products targeting virtually every segment of the graphics market. At the high-end ATI is announcing the Radeon X1950 XTX and Radeon X1950 XTX CrossFire Edition... Read more...
