The streaming music landscape isn't getting any less competitive -- just the opposite -- so in order to remain relevant in what's become a fast growing market, Rdio reportedly will join some of its more popular competitors by launching a free, ad-supported radio service. Rdio's transition to a freemium model will kick off with an updated app next Thursday. The four-year-old service faces stiff competition from the likes of Spotify, Google Play Music All Access, Beats Music (now owned by Apple), and others. It's available in 60 countries, though presumed to have less paying subscribers than Spotify... Read more...
After a lengthy U.S.-only rollout, Google Play Music streaming is now available in Canada, and the timing comes on the verge of Canadian Music Week. "Canada you have spoken and we have heard you loud and clear,” said Google's director of global music partnerships Zahavah Levine on Monday. “I could not be more thrilled to announce Google Play Music is launching in Canada this afternoon.” $9.99 per month (with a $7.99 per month introductory rate) gets Canucks unlimited listening to Google’s 25 million or so tracks and radio channels; up to 20,000 tracks from your own music... Google faces immense competition in the streaming space, but even so, the company's Chromecast dongle has two things going for it. The first is price. At just $35 -- and sometimes cheaper if there's a promotion or sale taking place -- Chromecast is one of the most affordable ways to upgrade your home or dorm room entertainment scheme with streaming content. And secondly, Chromecast continues to get better as more developers jump on board. One of the newest members to the Chromecast family is VUDU, the on-demand video service owned by Walmart. Using the VUDU app on Chromecast, movie buffs can control... Read more...
Barely eight months old (and just six months since launching to the public), the Vdio streaming platform is no more. "We are writing to inform you that we have decided to discontinue the Vdeo beta service," the Vdio team wrote in a email to beta participants. "Despite out efforts, we were not able to deliver the differentiated customer experience we had... Read more...

And now, it's previewing the next evolution of the company: Vdio. As you might expect, it's a new way to buy, rent, and share your favorite movies and TV shows with your friends, in real-time. For Rdio Unlimited users,... Read more...
