Kingston Technology might be known for its iconic blue heatspreaders, but that doesn't mean the company is afraid to dive deeper into its boxy of crayons. Attention DIY yourself system builders and upgraders, if you're thinking about adding more RAM to your system, you may not want to sit on the fence too much longer. According to DRAMeXchange, DRAM contract prices continue to rise, increasing by 2 percent on average in the first half of December, and still going up. The research firm says that 4GB modules rose the most, jumping 3.17 percent. Given that RAM prices have pretty much hit rock bottom, these bumps translate into nominal price increases, but hey, every dollar counts in this economy. It's just a matter of time before phones and tablets alike start shipping with triple digits worth of storage. Not today, but soon. And Samsung's getting us even closer. The company has just announced the mass production of the industry's highest density (128GB) embedded NAND storage. According to reports, DRAM inventory is on the rise, and that could translate into cheaper memory kits or prebuilt PCs with more RAM in the not too distant future. A weak PC market combined with the impending release of Windows 8 has led to a slowdown in PC sales, leaving OEMs with a stockpile of DRAM. Idaho's finest memory maker has just announced something that could have huge implications in the mobile realm. Micron has just introduced phase change memory for mobile devices. It's an industry first, touting 45nm PCM for mobile products that feature 1-gigabit PCM plus 512-megabit LPDDR2 in a multichip package. That's a lot of words, but it could mean more memory for smaller devices. Lest anyone forget that Samsung dabbles in more areas than just displays, the technology guru has just begun sampling what it claims is the world's first 16GB double data rate-4 (DDR4), registered dual inline memory modules (RDIMMs), which at the outset are designed for use in enterprise class servers. Samsung said it's sampling both 8GB and 16GB DDR4 memory modules, which it produces using a 30nm-class process technology. Increasingly, memory is becoming a major issue. More than other forms of storage, and in some cases, more than other major components in a mobile device. RAM is getting so cheap that it's actually a viable alternative to HDD-based storage, and there's plenty of room for collaboration from the major companies in the RAM race.
