AMD announced its second-quarter earnings yesterday and the company's results, while not perfect, imply continued strong execution. The company's revenue was up 40 percent year-on-year on strong demand for server and mobile parts. Total revenue was $1.65B, up five percent from the first quarter. Intel released its quarterly earnings last night, revealing yet another record-breaking quarter. This is the third time in four quarters that the company has managed to break one record or another; the results imply that the IT industry continues to recover slowly. All of Intel's financial indicators were up; the company earned $10.8 billion in revenue with a net income of $2.9 billion. The PC Client Group (think desktops, netbooks, and notebooks) grew by two percent in Q2 with record mobile shipments. Intel has announced its fiscal results for the second quarter of 2009, including the impact the European Union's record-breaking $1.44 billion fine against the company. Intel puts a brave face on its report, but the global economic recession clearly took its toll on Intel's sales volume over the past 12 months. The company reports that it saw its "strongest first-to-second-quarter growth since 1988," and expects a seasonally stronger second half.Compared to 2008, however, 2009 sales have slumped significantly even after we remove the EC's fine from the equation. You'd never know we were in a worldwide recession by looking at the GPU market. According to numbers just released by Jon Peddie Research, the estimated number of GPUs shipped during the third quarter (Q3) of 2008 represent the "largest increase in quarter to quarter shipments in six years." In Q3, over 111 million GPUs shipped, which is a 17.8-percent jump from the second quarter (Q2) of 2008. In Q3 of 2007, 91 million GPUs shipped. The Wii Fit has already hit one million in sales in Japan, but those of us here in the States lucky enough to have a Nintendo Wii who want a new way to lose some weight have been left out.  Well, Nintendo has detailed a "partial" list of upcoming Wii and DS games through the first of half of 2008, and Wii Fit is on the list - though not nailed down to a specific month or date.Perhaps a sign that America is finally getting its obesity scare under control, Nintendo has cautiously scheduled Wii Fit for a Q2 2008 release.
