Sony last week issued and then quickly pulled a firmware update for the PlayStation 3 after a flurry of complaints surfacing claiming the new software was bricking their consoles. Oops! Making good on its promise to investigate the issue and come up with a fix, Sony announced another firmware update to both repair the bricked consoles and introduce upgrades that were supposed to be sent out via last week's firmware. It doesn't make the issue any easier to swallow if you hastily updated your PlayStation 3 console to the latest software a few days back, but Sony has just issued a notice informing its customers that a fix is en route. Here's the quote: "We have identified the issue related to the PlayStation 3 software update (version 4.45) that impacted a small number of PS3 systems earlier this week. Ever since Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One in May, the user community has raised holy hell about the 24-hour mandatory online check in, the loss of used game sales, and the onerous online requirements that prohibited game or console imports into countries where the Xbox One service hasn't officially launched. Microsoft's entire E3 demo was buried thanks to a $499 price tag and a crushing video from Sony. While both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are a ways off from their release, I can already tell you one thing to expect: neither console is going to be fun as the previous-generation. Why? For Netflix users, there's hardly a better way to stream content than on Microsoft's Xbox 360. The user interface is fluid, and the console itself is plenty powerful to churn through the HD streams. One of the apparent casualties of Disney's decision to hand EA the reins of Star Wars development is the Wii U. DICE is one of the studios that EA confirmed would be working on Star Wars property, alongside Bioware and Visceral. The Battlefield developer has previously stated that the next generation of the Frostbite engine wouldn't run on the Wii U (meaning no Battlefield 4 for Nintendo's console), but new comments indicate that there's no chance of a Frostbite 2-powered game, either. Bethesda Softworks is prepping a new title in the Wolfenstein series that pits the franchise's hero, B.J. Blazkowicz, against an alternate-history version of the post World War II era in which the Nazis, not the Allies, were ultimately victorious. It’s (delightfully) evident how powerful mobile processors and graphics have become, but NVIDIA’s Senior Vice President of Content and Technology Tony Tamasi believes that mobile firepower is about to outpace the popular Xbox 360 and PS3 gaming consoles. “The PS3 and Xbox 360 are barely more powerful than mobile devices,” Tamasi told Bit-Tech. “The next click of mobile phones will outperform [them].” Specifically, he’s referring to the Tegra 5 mobile processor, which will follow the new Tegra 4 chip. Sony shared more details on the PS4 today, including CPU specs, controller design decisions, and advanced information on the platform's API. We've known that the PS4 used an AMD Jaguar-derived core for months, but the new information today points to a standard implementation of AMD's reference design. The PS4 has two four-core Jaguar blocks. Each block shares a 2MB L2 cache and each core has a 32K L1 data cache. When the Xbox 360 and PS3 first debuted, one of the major differences between them was how easy it was to access the underlying hardware. Kaz Hirai, then President of Sony Computer Entertainment, confirmed that the PS3 was far more difficult to program -- and that this was intentional.
