Not a fan of the freemium game model? Unfortunately for you, there's plenty of incentive for developers of casual games to go this route. PopCap Games, for example, found nearly 25 million reasons with the release of Plants vs. Zombies 2, the sequel to the highly popular Plants vs. Zombies tower defense game. "Plants vs. Zombies 2 has smashed records and been downloaded nearly 25 million times by players around the globe," PopCap Games bragged in a blog post. "Downloads for Plants vs. Zombies 2 have exceeded total downloads for Plants vs. Zombies, the original favorite from 2010. Our fans have... Read more...

PopCap Games, a division of Electronic Arts, confirmed on Wednesday that a sequel to its hugely popular (and highly addicting) Plants vs. Zombies tower defense game is in the works and slated to launch in "early summer." PopCap had previously said it was looking toward an IPO, in the October timeframe. The two companies, quite naturally, lauded the other party quite a bit in released statements. EA CEO John Riccitiello said, “EA and PopCap are a compelling combination. PopCap’s great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA’s momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA’s... Read more...
PopCap Games, creator of well-known and popular casual games such as Bejeweled, Peggle, and Plants vs. Zombies, is about to be acquired, according to a new report. The price is a cool $1 billion, according to multiple sources. That's right, $1 billion.  With a $1 billion price, which could be as high as a 10x multiple (with PopCap's revenue estimated at about $100 - $150 million), the most obvious choice, Zynga, was out of the running. The price was simply too rich for its blood.  So who was the big winner?  Other names bandied around included Google, Disney, and Activision.  Activision... Read more...
