HP is smarting from a $108 million fine today, thanks to a guilty plea it entered in a San Francisco federal court. HP and its subsidiaries were accused of paying bribes to officials and businesses in Mexico, Poland, and Russia to buy lucrative contracts. The fine wraps up the settlement, which was announced in April. HP has since jettisoned the people it believes were involved in the bribes. If you picture an HP executive as a straight-laced person in a conservative suit, it’s time to shake up that image, because three HP subsidiaries--in Russia, Poland, and Mexico--have spent years bribing government officials in those respective countries to snag lucrative contracts. Oops. In what seems to be an incident related to the ethnic homogeneity of Poland, a photo on Microsoft's Polish site was altered, from showing a black man to showing a white one. Modified Version of PictureMicrosoft has since apologized for the change, which drew much criticism online. However, it did not offer an explanation for the change. If you look at the same photo on the Microsoft's U.S. Web site see two men, one Asian and one black, and a white woman seated at a conference room table. On Friday, Apple's iPhone went on sale in 21 other countries, including India and Poland as iPhone 3G Rollout Phase II began. While demand for the iPhone 3G has been loud and clear in many countries so far (unlike 3G service on the device), the iPhone isn't quite such a hot commodity in the newly launched set countries.
