The fallout from the massive holiday Target data breach persists, as the retailer works feverishly to sort out exactly what happened and what to do about it. The 40 million or so customers who used cards at Target between November 27th and December 15th and had their data accessed by cybercrooks still need to be wary of any fraudulent activity, but there’s at least a shred of good news: your PIN numbers are safe. It looks like the rumored spin-off of AMD's manufacturing operations is just hours away now and reports are starting to ping across the wire of a "significant announcement" that AMD CEO Dirk Meyer will be making shortly.  In fact, we've been invited to a press web cast at 8AM EST that AMD will hold in the morning.  Historically, AMD has taken largely an in-house fabrication model for their wafer fabrication.  However, capitalizing this effort is a huge recurring and perpetual investment that frankly only makes sense if there are significant and off-setting economies... Over the last couple of days, there have been some rumblings around the web that NVIDIA is planning to drop the price of their recently launched GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 cards in response to AMD's potent, and more affordable, Radeon HD 4800 series.  The actual numbers quoted have varied, but today we heard some news directly from multiple NVIDIA board partners that pricing on the GeForce GTX 280 may actually be dropping to as low as $499--a significant drop from the $649 launch price. Hewett Packard must have IBM envy. They've purchased Ross Perot's old technology services company, Electronic Data Systems,  for $13.2 billion, so they can claim to be the second place provider of such services to businesses and government, behind IBM.  As usual, the first rule of Takeover Club is: you're fired. It's a field dominated by IBM, which generated $54 billion in revenue from technology services last year. Intel may be considering closing their operations in the Philippines.  There isn't any estimates on who Intel might be able to sell their facility to, or what such a sell might mean for the world's largest chip maker or the numerous employees.“Located south of Manila and employing 3,000 people, Intel Technology Philippines Inc is the US firm's second offshore assembly operations center in Asia and also serves as a test site.The company said it has invested around 1.51 billion US dollars in the country.”The senior management met with employees Wednesday, but the fate of Intel’s operations in the... If you're old, you have a soft spot for Motorola. Plenty of people still remember Motorola vacuum tubes, and all sorts of hobbyists remember buying semiconductors and various electronic components for their projects with the spiky Motorola "M" logo on them. Lots of people are walking around with Motorola phones in their pockets, too -- yours truly included. There is no official report from AMD on the wires, but multiple news outlets are reporting that chipmaker AMD will show 5 percent of its workforce the door. AMD is slated to begin shipping quad-core Phenom 9850, 9750, 9650, 9550, and 9150 processors in the coming weeks, according to sources close to the company. The "50" branding scheme indicates that the processors are the B3 version of the Phenom that fixes the "TLB" bug.
