We’ve opened our last few SSD round-ups with comments regarding the break-neck pace at which the solid state storage market has advanced these last few years. At the risk of repeating ourselves, the SSD market continues to show no signs of slowing down. New drives are being introduced constantly and along with updated interfaces, drivers and firmware, manufacturers continue to push the envelope. Consider this; Solid State Drives have gone from essentially non-existent on the desktop to the preferred storage medium of enthusiasts in less than three years. And they’ve offered significant... USB 3.0 just keeps getting better, and faster. Patriot, which is probably best known for their solid state drives and memory modules, has just revealed a new USB 3.0 thumb drive. The Supersonic USB 3.0 lives up to its name, offering a native single-chip USB 3.0 controller as well as quad-channel technology that helps better take advantage of the bandwidth. The Patriot Supersonic series eliminates performance bottlenecks introduced when using a separate USB 3.0 bridge chip by integrating a native USB 3.0 flash memory controller. This results in a smaller footprint and higher performance than bridge... Read more...
We've got a review of a Patriot solid state drive on tap for you today. Patriot has employed SSD controllers from a number of manufactures including JMicron and Indilinx in a few of their product lines, but in the newest Inferno series of SSDs, Patriot went with SandForce’s SF-1200 series controller. The specifications for the Patriot Inferno 120GB drive we’ll be testing here are listed on the first page of the article. If you’re familiar with other enthusiast-class SandForce based offerings, many of the features and specifications should come as no surprise. Check them out and... Read more...
For a time, Intel’s X25 series of solid state drives stood head and shoulders above the rest of the SSD pack. But with the influx of new players along with the rapid pace of innovation in the SSD space, Intel’s aging offerings—while still very good—are no longer a cut above. In fact, in enthusiast circles, it’s drives based on upstart SandForce’s controllers that currently garner the lion’s share of interest. And you don’t have to take our word for it. Just take a look at SandForce’s current list of partners; it reads like a list of” who’s... Read more...
Shortly after publishing a recent 5-way SSD round-up, a number of the manufacturers that employ Sandforce controllers in their products released updated drives that offered more usable capacity to end users. The first wave of SF-1200 based drives to hit the scene had about 22% of their flash memory over-provisioned for cache purposes, wear-leveling, and other proprietary Sandforce functions. 100GB drives like the OCZ Vertex 2 and Corsair Force F100, for example, actually featured 128GB of flash memory on-board. The second wave of drives to arrive, however, have about 6.25% of their flash memory... Read more...
It is hard to believe that almost two years has passed since we first rounded-up some of the first solid state drive offerings for the PC. Since that time, the landscape has changed dramatically. Capacities have increased somewhat, but performance has been improved significantly. Many early solid sate drives suffered from terrible stuttering issues and offered performance that was actually lower than much more affordable, traditional hard drives. Today though, SSDs are far more stable and reliable and their performance is orders-of-magnitude better than even the fastest of hard drives. Despite... Read more...

It has been quite some time since we've heard of any new wares coming from Patriot Memory, but today the outfit is joining the quickly growing solid state drive market with a trio of devices. The company is debuting its Fusion SSD Series, a name that likely rings a bell for those familiar with the NAND Flash industry."By the addition of the DRAM cache, the Fusion greatly increases the random and sequential read and write transfer rates," according to Meng J. Choo, Patriot's Flash Product Manager. He goes on to say, "The DRAM acts as a buffer and increases the reliability, and lessens the possibility... Read more...
We recently got the chance to evaluate a new, super-fast DDR2 memory kit and wanted to share some of the finer details with you here.  If you're a regular reader of HotHardware and follow the PC hardware scene, you know that companies like Corsair and OCZ are constantly pushing the performance envelope and offer memory kits that'll operate well beyond the "officially" supported specifications of every chipset currently on the market.  Up to this point the fastest memory we had ever tested was Corsair's Dominator TWIN2X2048-10000C5DF. This Corsair kit is rated for operation at 1250MHz with 5-5-5-18... Read more...
Hey folks! Valve has released version 3 of their Steam service today. Yes, version 3. Those of you who were previously using the "-clientbeta betaui" tags with Steam already know what to expect. Along with a new interface, hopefully this version will be void of many of the problems with the previous version(quirky offline mode support, and occasional problems downloading games to name a few). The friends network still isn't working, so don't get rid of X-Fire just yet. Just restart Steam to receive the update.
