Display Taiwan 2010 has followed Computex in order to keep the trade show floors humming in Taipei, and the panel makers are out in full force showcasing their latest goods. AUO is a company that few people recognize, but that most LCD buyers should be quite familiar with. AUO makes a great many of the panels that end up re-branded by Dell, HP, Acer and the rest, so there's a good chance you're looking at an AUO panel to read this right now. AU Optronics has arrived at the trade show with a full slate of new goods, including a few "world's firsts." The exhibits include 3D display technologies with... Read more...
3D is going places that you never thought possible, and honestly, in more places than you probably ever imagined. Just a couple of years ago, 3D was seen as a has-been format that died out in the 80s. Today, it's the "next big thing." As if taking over the cinema and your living room weren't enough, 3D is also coming to handheld gaming consoles. And maybe, your next phone. Sharp has announced that it will start making "advanced 3D displays for cellphones and other mobile devices that don't require special viewing glasses," so it's very likely that 3D versions of devices you already own will start... Two of the most well-known, yet equally unknown, companies are joining forces today, and it's all for the forces of good. One Laptop Per Child is a project that never really met its goal, and thus, has feel from the spotlight in the mainstream. Of course, OLPC XO (green) laptops are still being distributed to students, but at a higher cost than originally suggested.Pixel Qi, on the other hand, has been instrumental in the progress of displays, and while they have yet to ship a product en masse to compete with E-Ink displays and the typical LCD, hopes are high that they can really turn the display... Don't get us wrong, we know that JVC is a trusted name in consumer electronics, but it's hardly the first name we think of when considering a new TV. When big brands such as Sony, Samsung and Sharp soaking up the ad time, it's oftentimes hard to remember that JVC is in the mix. Of course, all that could change thanks to one set, but we'd argue the pricing needs to be aligned with current market demand before anyone eyes it seriously. Announced this past week at the CEDIA Expo in Atlanta, Georgia, the super sleek, super-thin LT-32WX50 is easily one of the thinnest televisions we've ever seen. It's... Read more...
Think you can handle up to 250 video displays at once? If you're Samsung, you're leaning "yes." The Ultra-Definition Display (UD) System is described as an interactive video wall solution that is currently being integrated into the firm's UX and UT series displays.J.H. Earlier in February a strange case arose over an obscure California law, the Solar Shade Control Act (.PDF), passed in 1979 after the Oil Crisis. The law essentially made criminals out of a pair of Sunnyvale residents, whose eight redwood trees cast shade on a neighbor's solar panels. The dispute between the neighbors, Mark Vargas (solar panel owner) and Richard Treanor and Carolynn Bissett (tree owners) was "settled" when a judge ruled Treanor and Bissett had to cut two of the trees down, despite the fact that the trees pre-dated the solar panels.Let us cast some common sense on this by saying:... Many have modified their Priuses, and one of those possible modifications is a rooftop solar panel system.  It seems that Toyota is considering the same as standard equipment for its own models, but only for high-end models, and only to power the AC. Toyota Motor Corp plans to install solar panels on some Prius hybrids in its next remodelling, responding to growing demand for "green" cars amid record-high oil prices, a source briefed on the matter said on Monday. The panels, supplied by Kyocera Corp would be able to power part of the air-conditioning on high-end versions of the gasoline-electric... Read more...

Under the terms of the agreement, Sharp will spin off its LCD panel facilities at a new plant that it is building in western Japan, and share its... Read more...
Considering solar panels?  How is your relationship with your neighbors?  You might want to look around you and see if any neighbors have trees which may in the future shade your planned panel locations.  Technically, if they eventually do, it will be a crime.Richard Treanor planted the trees in his yard 11 years ago, but neighbor Mark Vargas says they reduce the amount of electricity the panels can generate."Trees do a lot of good," says Richard. "Solar does a lot of good, too.""Some people say they're for solar power, and some people do something about it," says Mark.Vargas says... Read more...

For the average business-class user, extra RAM, a faster processor or a more powerful video card won't necessarily increase work efficiency or productivity. One of the best ways to boost your productivity is to add more inches, of screen real estate that is. If you simply add another monitor or get a bigger one, you can quickly realize the benefits of extra desktop space, like less Alt-Tabbing and more windows open at once. Although the work efficiency / productivity argument is an important one in the business world, most of us enthusiasts find it somewhat unexciting to think about. We... Read more...
