It has been a while since I personally have setup a bench, rolled up my sleeves and built a test system with top-shelf components, a fresh OS install and some overclocking mojo. However, Intel's recent release of Ivy Bridge-E gave us a hankering to do just that. Asus, Corsair, and Intel held a joint event in the Four Seasons hotel yesterday, near the Moscone Center in San Francisco where IDF13 is currently taking place. During the event, the three companies outlined the many advances they’ve all made over the last few years and some well-known overclockers took products from each company—namely the Intel Core i7-4960X, some Corsair memory, and an Asus X79-based motherboard—and overclocked them using liquid nitrogen, in an attempt to break a number of world performance records. At PAX Prime 2013, Intel hosted a short hands-on workshop showcasing their latest bleeding edge idea: overclocking SSDs. It appears that Intel, long an enabler of overclocking processors, wants to overclock everything, starting with SSDs. At September’s Intel Developers Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, Intel scheduled a session that covers a number of overclocking topics, including “Demonstrating overclocking SSD technology”. Gigabyte had us out to their L.A. offices to show off their latest line of motherboards packing the Intel Z87 chipset, and as usual, the company has a whole lot of SKUs coming down the pike. Clearly, the most work went into Gigabyte’s OC and gaming lines, but there are plenty of welcome surprises and new features in this launch. There’s a new NVIDIA GPU in town, not to mention a new spate of motherboards on the way, so it’s not terribly surprising that EVGA has updated its overclocking software accordingly--EVGA Precision X (4.2.0) is now available and free to download. The latest Precision X enjoys a bit of a facelift and as always lets users overclock their GPUs by adjusting clock speed, memory clock speed, fan speed, voltage, and other parameters. A team of overclockers dubbed “The Killers” broke the record for the fastest overclock of an AMD Trinity APU at the AMD Extreme OC show in Taiwan and also took out the record for AMD’s Vishera platform for good measure. Using a Gigabyte F2A85X-UP4 motherboard, the crew cranked an AMD 5800K APU with a stock speed of 3.8GHz all the way up to 7.86GHz. “We are extremely excited with this OC result because the F2A85X-UP4 is the first motherboard from GIGABYTE to use our new Ultra Durable 5 technology,” said Henry Kao, Vice President of the GIGABYTE Motherboard Business... Renowned overclocker Andre Yang is no stranger to breaking clockspeed records, such as the time he pushed an AMD Bulldozer processor to 8.58GHz just four days after he already broke the record using the same chip. Now he's turned his attention to Intel's Ivy Bridge architecture, and with the help of an Asus Maximus V Extreme motherboard, Yang was able to push a Core i7 3770K to a record-setting 7,184.3MHz (7.184GHz)!
