You may have noticed that auction site eBay was down for the count or slow loading for a period of time over the weekend. Don't worry, the problem wasn't on your end -- eBay's VP of Global Platform & Infrastructure Group, Sri Shivananda, issued an apology for the recent site troubles, adding that the company believes "unexpected power issues" are to blame. "First, on behalf of the company and our team, I apologize to the eBay customers affected by this incident," Shivananda said. "As a marketplace, we understand how important it is that we maintain a reliable platform for our buyers and sellers.... Read more...
It's been a rough week for broadband Internet subscribers. Last weekend, Charter Communications suffered a widespread service outage that affected customers in several states, and now Time Warner Cable is scrambling to fix an issue with its Internet infrastructure that also caused service disruptions across the United States. The good news here is that TWC's cable and Internet services are "largely restored," according to a Twitter post by Good Morning America. The cable giant is placing blame on "an issue with our Internet backbone" during routine network maintenance, whereas it's believed Charter... Read more...
Facebook doesn’t go down all that often, but when it does it’s big news. The social network reportedly experienced an outage at approximately 1 a.m. PST that affected users all over the world. Users in countries including Australia, New Zealand, England, South Korea, India, were unable to access Facebook, instead seeing an error message saying "Sorry, something went wrong". The outage lasted about half an hour. Credit: Reuters/Thomas White “Earlier today, we experienced an issue that prevented people from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time,” Facebook’s... One has to wonder if Facebook is feeling any buyer’s remorse, as the messaging service the company just dropped $19 billion to acquire experienced an outage on Saturday, according to reports. WhatsApp didn’t provide much in the way of details beyond a pair of tweets that acknowledged the outage and then stated that service had been restored. “Sorry we currently experiencing server issues. we hope to be back up and recovered shortly,” reads the first. The second tweet, posted two and a half hours later, reads “WhatsApp service has been restored. We are so sorry for... Read more...
You've probably noticed, Gmail is down. It's not just down for you - it's down across the US and the world, with reports coming in from Europe, Canada, and India that one of the planet's largest email networks has suddenly failed. The only thing missing is any information from Google. Ironically, Google's App dashboard was one of the last places to get the news; the website showed Google Mail as being up when I began writing this story, then flipped to "Disrupted" partway through. Why? Who knows. Jokes about someone unplugging a server don't really apply, we're talking about a worldwide service... Read more...
For some unlucky users, Yahoo's email service has been down for nearly a week. The problem first began at 10:27 PM PT last Monday, and since that time, Yahoo's team of engineers have been working feverishly to fully restore service. Things are taking longer than expected because the issue is "much more complex than it seemed at first," Yahoo chief Marissa Mayer stated in a apologetic blog post. According to Mayer, the problem was traced back to a specific hardware outage in one of Yahoo's storage systems serving 1 percent of its users. At the time, Yahoo expected to have things fully operational... Read more...
Yahoo's team of engineers are scrambling to fix a problem with the company's email service that is still affecting some users after more than 48 hours of downtime. Some Yahoo Mail users have been unable to access their email since late Monday night, and while Yahoo initially tried to dismiss the outage as something temporary for "scheduled maintenance," the company eventually fessed up that something else was going on after the problem persisted. "Some of our users have not been able to access their mail since 10:27 PM PT on Monday night, due to a hardware problem in one of our mail data centers,"... Read more...
Early this morning, Facebook experienced an outage, leaving many users unable to post status updates, leave comments, upload pictures, and more. According to Downrightnow, the site hit a service disruption, and as of the last update at roughly 8:15am EST, there were still widespread problems. There have been a couple of brief dips in service over the last day or so, as well. Facebook has yet to comment on the situation--maybe they were trying to post an update on Facebook (zing!)--but more important than being unable to post status updates and the like is the fact that Facebook’s messaging... The sky isn't falling, but it sure feels like the web is falling apart lately. Last Friday, Google went dark for full 5 minutes, resulting in a 40 percent drop in Internet traffic and highlighting just how dependent we are on the company's various online services. Around the same time, Outlook.com went offline and stayed that way for three days before Microsoft was able to alleviate the problem, which turned out to be a failure in a caching service that interfaces with devices using Exchange ActiveSync. Capping off a forgettable weekend in cloud computing, Amazon suffered an outage yesterday that,... Read more...
Imagine if, for whatever reason, Google one day decided to pull the plug on all of its operations and shut down its servers without notice. It wouldn't quite be what some imagined Y2K to be like, but given how popular Google services like Search, Gmail, and Docs are to the masses, it would be a shock to the Internet system if Google went dark. Such a scenario may never play out, though Google did suffer an outage over the weekend, one that lasted a full five minutes and saw everything from Google Drive to YouTube fell off the face of the web. Five minutes might not sound like much, but during the... Read more...
Ah, downed Internet access. It’s a time to grab a cup of coffee, dust off that book you’ve been meaning to read…or go to a neighbor’s house and use their Internet connection to read about the problems with yours. And if you live in the southern U.S. and have AT&T’s U-verse package, you’re probably doing just that. AT&T U-verse is a connectivity bundle that includes phone, Internet, and digital TV, so if you’re experiencing the U-verse outage, you’re likely missing out these services. So far, we’ve seen reports of the digital TV service... Read more...
For the second time in about a week, Netflix is experiencing an outage. On Christmas Eve, many users lost streaming capabilities and didn’t get it back until well into Christmas morning. Netflix pointed the finger at Amazon Web Services, and indeed it appears that an Amazon facility in Virginia was to blame. This time around, Netflix streaming is apparently unaffected, with the DVD side of the site taking a turn at laying an egg. Netflix sent TechCrunch this statement: “We are experiencing some technical difficulty with the Netflix DVD Web site, which as a result may not be available... Read more...
The Cloud Saved Games feature of Xbox LIVE went down on December 29th, which infuriated users, particularly those who were counting on some day-long gaming to pass the time during holiday family visits. Microsoft engineers scrambled to fix the problem, although the outage lasted until early this morning. “It took longer than we expected to get back to full performance as we needed to ensure the integrity of everyone’s game saves”, said Xbox LIVE General Manager Alex Garden in a blog post. “Whether you couldn’t access your game saves for a couple of hours or a couple... Talk about an unfortunate way to spend Christmas Eve. For a great many Netflix engineers, they're up right this moment working to patch up an error that has sent Netflix streams offline for many. Reportedly, there's an outage at Amazon Web Services that's impacting Netflix, leaving many people who are looking to stream some content on a rare night off in the proverbial dark. Netflix's support staff is aware of the issue, and working hard to remedy things. Hopefully, things will be smooth sailing by the time most of the East Coast wakes up for Christmas morning....
