Microsoft keeps sharing the love. In keeping with its welcome trend of embracing multiplatform app development, Microsoft announced that its popular scanning app for Windows Phone is now available for Android and iPhone devices. Office Lens for iPhone is free at Apple’s App Store and the Office Lens Android Preview is available to people interested in testing it out. The idea behind Office Lens is that it helps Microsoft OneNote users (and OneDrive users) pull content into the cloud with their smartphones. If you’re an Evernote user, you probably already use Scannable, a similar app. Scan a note... Read more...
Here’s your feel-good story for Thursday afternoon. Albert Manero, who has a degree in Aerospace engineering from the University of Central Florida and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, has made it a point to help serve others. "My parents always encouraged me to use my education to help others and to dream big dreams,” says Manero. “Now I want to inspire others to help engineer hope for the world." Manero is doing just that with Limbitless Solutions, a volunteer foundation that uses 3D printer technology to build bionic arms for children that have either lost a limb,... Read more...
Microsoft's been pushing its OneNote app pretty hard in the last few months, first by updating it for Windows 8.1 with new features, and more recently by porting it over to Mac and iOS where users can download and use OneNote for free. Apparently the offer of using OneNote for free was too good to refuse, as it quickly climbed to the top of the freebie chart on Apple's Mac App Store. OneNote had to leapfrog past Apple's OX X 10.9 (Mavericks) to take the top spot, which it did within hours after launching on Monday, ComputerWorld reports. In doing so, OneNote pushed down several popular titles,... Read more...
There's nothing quite like a little cross-platform love to get your morning started. Microsoft has long since supported rival platforms, with iOS and Mac coming immediately to mind. As Apple continues to grow, Microsoft realizes that it can't just shun its biggest threat. Instead, it's embracing diversity, this week announcing OneNote for Mac as well as iOS, and it's making the platform (which includes the Windows version) totally free. Not only is this a major step for Microsoft, but it's also a shot across the bow to items like Google Keep and Evernote. OneNote is a powerful tool, but if it's... Read more...
Microsoft said its goal in updating OneNote for Android devices was to allow users to get more things done in less time. Towards that end, the latest version of OneNote for Android now includes an "Add to OneNote" feature, which allows users to add important things from any application on their Android device. "Just look for the Share button in your favorite browser, news aggregator, or recipe application. Then select 'Add to OneNote' and OneNote will store the item for you and also make it available to you on all your device," Microsoft explained in a blog post announcing the update. Alternately,... Companies update their apps all the time, and usually the changes aren’t particularly noteworthy, but Microsoft just revealed a doozy of an update to its OneNote app for Windows 8.1 devices. One major change is the Share charm that lets you send anything you see on your screen (such as something from an app) to OneNote with a swipe and a couple of clicks. You can do the same with screenshots. Other new features include scanning capabilities with Camera Scan, which will automatically clean up shots of whiteboards and documents to make them appear to be scanned, and new OCR recognition makes... Microsoft announced that its Office Web Apps, the teaser portion of its Office 365 initiative, are getting some updates in the form of real-time co-authoring, which allows multiple users to collaborate on a single document simultaneously. Users can work from their desktops, laptops, tablets, and other mobile devices whether online or offline. (Even if you’re working offline on a shared document, your changes will sync when you reconnect.) Further, some of the Office Web Apps received individual updates. The Word app has improved formatting, find and replace, more styles and formatting for... Read more...
Microsoft announced updated versions of its OneNote note-taking app for iOS and Android, which follows hot on the heels of the launch of Office Mobile for iPhone. However, unlike the latter, the former isn’t reliant (necessarily) on an Office 365 subscription. You can simply download the app and tie it to a free Microsoft account. Of course, OneNote is also available for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 devices as well as on the web. Microsoft says that new features include a consistent experience across all devices, including text formatting, shading and borders in tables, consistent support... Read more...
Last week, Windows 8's head developer, Steven Sinofsky, published an 8,600-word blog post describing virtually every facet of Windows 8's development, including the hardware Microsoft has used for system testing and simulation. One of the major bullet points of the announcement was the following: WOA includes desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. These new Office applications, codenamed “Office 15”, have been significantly architected for both touch and minimized power/resource consumption, while also being fully-featured for consumers and providing...
