Back in late September, HP unveiled its affordable "Stream" line of Windows notebooks and tablets with expected availability in early November. Well, we're into the first week of November now, and as promised, you can hop on the web and order a Stream 11 or Stream 13 laptop with Windows 8.1 at a rock bottom price. How low? The HP Stream 11 runs $200 and the HP Stream 13 costs $30 more for the luxury of a bigger display (13.3-inch versus 11.6-inch, both with a 1366x768 resolution) and optional 200MB of free 4G data each month with no annual contract for the life of the device. Otherwise, these systems... Read more...
The PC laptop market is a funny place. Good laptops are fairly easy to find, but great laptops are staggeringly rare. This is true even at the boutique end of the market, where manufacturers have a tendency to choose powerful components, but cram them into a chassis that can't handle the heat without sounding like a jet turbine, or pick great, quiet hardware but opt for a sub-par 1080p screen whose quality leaves something to be desired. The Asus G751 is not a good laptop. The G751 is a great laptop. It is, in fact, the single best gaming laptop I have ever reviewed. If you're in the market for... Read more...

Have you ever thought to yourself, "I wish my laptop had a mechanical keyboard!", but have been left depressed with the dearth of options? If so, MSI's latest gaming laptop is worthy of your consideration. Called the GT80 Titan, MSI has impressively embedded an entire mechanical keyboard in its base, complete with CHERRY MX brown switches (light bump, non-clicky). Behold, what I feel to be one of the most interesting laptops ever: I admit that I've joked with myself (because I'm a little odd like that) about having a notebook with a mechanical keyboard, but I never actually thought it was something... In late August, Dell Alienware took the wraps off of a radically new Area 51-branded desktop system featuring an angular case designed for maximum thermal efficiency and ergonomics. We first gave you a glimpse of that system right here, and have a full review of Haswell-E and Tri-SLI powered version of the Area 51 in the works as we speak--that article should be posted very soon. Alienware is officially launching the Area 51 tonight at a swanky event in New York City, but the company has another couple of surprises coming down the pipeline as well, also being unveiled tonight, namely the Alienware... It took some time for Google's Chromebook platform to find its footing in the market place, but now that it has, these cloud-based PCs are finally starting to hit their stride. In what turned out to be yet another solid quarter, Chromebook shipments jumped 67 percent sequentially, according to new data by ABI Research. At the current pace, Chromebook shipments will double in size compared to last year. "Consumers are hungry for a product that is cost effective but also provides the versatility and functionality of a laptop," says Research Analyst Stephanie Van Vactor. "The growth of the Chromebook... Read more...
NVIDIA recently launched mobile variants of their latest Maxwell GPU architecture and we gave you a quick tease to show you what they were all about. Maxwell on the desktop is potent enough. However, the performance and efficiency of NVIDIA's latest GPU architecture would surely play out well in desktop replacement notebooks that cater to gamers and enthusiast who want graphics muscle and aren't afraid of a little extra heft. ASUS quickly saw the benefits of NVIDIA's Maxwell mobile GPU as well and obviously had an early lead in engineering a new gaming notebook that employs NVIDIA's fastest mobile... Read more...
Apple set the bar for thin and light notebooks when it introduced the MacBook Air several years ago, and since then, a number of Windows-based competitors have emerged. There's even a dedicated Ultrabook category for particularly thin and light Windows PCs with Intel hardware inside. While no longer in a league of its own, Apple's rumored 12-inch MacBook Air might again set the standard. Citing those always chatty sources within Taiwan's supply chain, Digitimes says that a limited production run of 12-inch MacBook Air models began this month and will gradually increase in volume beginning in November.... Acer on Tuesday announced that its V Nitro Black Edition series of high-performance laptops built around Intel's Haswell platform is now available in North America. These notebooks purportedly offer workstation-class capabilities, though when it comes time to play, the inclusion of an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M will happily get you gaming. "Acer Aspire V Nitro Black Edition notebooks are ideally suited for people who use the same system in their professional and personal lives," said Eric Ackerson, senior product marketing and brand manager. "V Nitro's upscale modern design doesn't look out of place... Read more...
We think it's fitting for Maingear to bring 3K resolution gaming to its Pulse line of laptops. Consider that playing games at full HD 1080p (1920x1080) on the desktop is nothing special these days, which is why we're seeing more and more players jump to higher resolution displays, from 2560x1440 (most 27-inch class monitors) on up to the emerging 4K (3840x2160) format. We're finally seeing some innovation again in the monitor market, yet laptop displays were stuck in a state of comatose for a while. Not anymore. On paper, the Pulse 15 is a potent machine armed with an Intel Core i7 4710HQ mobile... Read more...
We think it's fitting for Maingear to bring 3K resolution gaming to its aptly named Pulse line of laptops. It's no secret that the past few years in mobile have been rough for Intel, largely due to the fact that ARM has proven itself to be an intense competitor. When smartphones exploded years ago, and tablets later on, it was ARM that dominated the landscape, and today, nothing has changed. ARM has even found itself in some ultra-portables, with the NVIDIA Tegra 2-based ASUS Transformer TF101 being one of the first. Clearly, Intel hasn't been pleased with this, and while its releases in recent years haven't given us the hope that the company would soon find itself in a lot more ultra-portable mobile... Intel's next-generation Broadwell Y (now known as the Core M processor) is set to ship on schedule for the end of the year. The company, occasionally flagged with criticism of its repeated delays and with its IDF show ramping up next week, is sharing more detail on the upcoming hardware, features and performance characteristics of its new 14nm mobile platform.  We've previously offered up a 14nm deep-dive on how Broadwell Y came to be from a design, process and manufacturing standpoint.  Today, we'll look more closely at how the new Core M processor's feature list, how it will be productized...
