There have been rumors suggesting Barnes & Noble was preparing a slightly less expensive Nook Tablet that would better compete with Amazon's popular Kindle Fire tablet. Now, those rumors have been confirmed. Today, Barnes & Noble announced the 8GB Nook Tablet with a price tag of $199. IDC suggests that worldwide tablet sales have skyrocketed over the past 12 months, up 264.5 percent in Q3 2011 as compared to the same period in 2010.  Q3 results, strong as they were, didn't quite match up to the analyst firm's projections, but yearly sales are expected to hit 63.3 million units. Apple continues to dominate the market, with an estimated 11.1M iPads shipped in Q3. The company's market share is estimated at 61.5 percent—a two percent decline from Q2. Boingo still isn't available in quite enough places, but they're getting closer. The Wi-Fi provider has just announced a new version of its Wi-Fi app for Android is now available to NOOK Color customers as a free NOOK App through the Barnes & Noble NOOK Bookstore. The app marks the first deal between B&N and Boingo, giving NOOK Color users access to over 325,000 Wi-Fi hotspots around the world with a single click. Plenty of users have rooted their Nook Color eReader with custom firmware in order to gain access to the Android Market and download applications. However, the majority of people have stuck with the official firmware that comes with the device.
