We first got a taste of YouTube's 360-degree videos in March when the feature was first launched. The 360-degree view puts you right in the center of the action and allows you to pan around see every possible angle captured with cameras like the Ricoh Theta and Kodak SP360. While YouTube’s 360-degree video collection has grown quite a bit since the March debut, a new video that popped up over the weekend is sure to thrill auto enthusiasts. The video gurus at Hamilton Kidd VR teamed up with Nissan’s NISMO racing division to capture the first ever 360-degree footage of a vehicle lapping the famed... Read more...
It’s hard to believe that the current generation Nissan GT-R has been available in the U.S. since July 2008. Since its debut, the GT-R has demolished vehicles costing thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars more when it comes to outright performance. This is despite the fact that the GT-R has been criticized for 1) lacking a “soul”, 2) being controlled by “nanny” computers, and 3) weighing in at nearly 3,900 pounds. The GT-R has never been starved for power, but it still will receive a significant power boost in next incarnation according to German auto publication Autobild. The 2016... Read more...
The automobile industry is changing right before our very eyes. We have companies like Chevrolet building insanely powerful modern-day muscle cars; Ford and others getting fancy with newfangled technology integrations; Tesla pushing new and used sales of electric vehicles; and of course companies like Google ready to hit the road with self-driving cars. Take your pick on which is the most interesting, but if you ask Nissan, the company might tell you that autonomous technology is where it's at.More than just a passing interest from the sidelines, Nissan's Chief Executive Office Carlo Ghosn indicated... While this one's a little off the beaten path of the stories we typically cover, we wanted to give our readers who might own an older Nissan vehicle a heads up about an expanded recall related to complaints about defective air bags. Nissan widened its net of recalled vehicles to include an additional 226,000 automobiles, which brings the total number of affected automobiles to 664,628 so far. Straight to the point, Nissan has recalled its Infiniti I32 (2002-2003), Infiniti FX35 (2003), Infiniti FX45 (2003), Infiniti QX42 (2002-2003), Maxima (2002-2003), Pathfinder (2002-2003), and Sentra (2002-2004).... The race to develop a driverless car is on, driven in large part by the efforts of Google, although plenty of other companies such as Intel and Ford are investing heavily into developing such technology as well. You can count Nissan as one major car maker that’s in the fray, as CEO Carlos Ghosn revealed the company’s plans to reporters in Tokyo. Nissan has a roadmap for a nearly autonomous car by 2020. By 2016, Nissan will have vehicles that can self-park; by 2018, they’ll be able to change lanes without driver intervention, and by 2020 they’ll be able to navigate intersections... Read more...
The automobile is quickly becoming the next interconnected battleground, and AT&T's latest announcement goes a long way to proving that. The telecom company has today announced an agreement with Sirius XM Radio to provide mobile connectivity to support  a suite of security and additional services for Nissan automobiles in North America. Moreover, if we had to guess, we'd say that other carriers are likely courting other automakers to hopefully make this more of the rule instead of the exception. SiriusXM’s in-vehicle telematics solution will provide Nissan vehicle owners 24/7 emergency... Read more...
What if your car could power your home? Wait, what? It's true -- Nissan is reportedly saying that their Leaf electric card can actually feed power from its battery pack back into a home, with plenty of juice to run appliances. The new project is called Leaf to Home, and it uses Li-ion batteries as emergency backup for homes. According to Nissan, this functionality would prove most useful if a home were hit by a natural disaster or power outage, and we certainly could see it going over quite well with prospective buyers. According to the company, plans are in motion to commercialize the tech by... Read more...
Navigation systems have been a luxury add-on option to many vehicles for some time now. With the exception of the Suzuki SX4 however, a built-in navigation system with a new car generally cost at least $1,000 if not much more. Given the plethora of personal navigation devices from the likes of Garmin and TomTom, as well as the many options available for a wireless phone, there are plenty of people who don't see the need to spend this type of money for an in-dash system. This could change, however, as Nissan plans to offer a $400 navigation system in some of its 2010 MY products. While a $400 price... Read more...
Here comes still more technology based on fish. As opposed to the earlier tech, autonomous robotic fish built to detect pollution, Nissan has developed a system that emulates schooling behavior of fish to avoid auto collisions.Nissan's new "EPORO" robot car concept is designed to travel in a group of "cars" while avoiding obstacles (including other cars). The technology is designed to mimic the behavioral patterns of a school of fish. The EPORO technology is an update to the Biomimetic Car Robot Drive "BR23C" concept which was designed to mimic bees. Why did Nissan switch from bees to fish? The... Read more...
Japanese car maker Nissan has developed a concept car that features various apparatuses, including a breathalyzer-like detection system, that are designed to prevent drunk or fatigued drivers off the road. The sensors pick up odors in the car and check the driver’s sweat for traces of alcohol. If the driver is judged to be over-the-limit, the computer system can issue an alert or even lock down the ignition.. “The air odor sensors are embedded in the driver and passenger seats, while a detector in the gear-shift knob measures perspiration from the driver's palm.” Nissan’s concept car also comes...
