Hulu has suffered its fair share of criticism from dissing Boxee, but now that things seem to be ironed out between the two, we're thrilled to hear that more content is coming to the online video portal. Hulu and The Walt Disney Company today announced that Disney, through a subsidiary of ABC Enterprises Inc., has agreed to join NBC Universal, News Corporation and Providence Equity Partners as a joint venture partner and equity owner of Hulu. What's it all mean, you ask? To suits, it means another thing entirely, but to consumers, it means that Hulu's library of material just got a massive boost.In... Read more...
YouTube on Thursday took aim at its biggest competitor, Hulu, announcing it would begin offering movies, TV shows and content from studios such as Crackle/Sony Pictures, CBS, MGM, Lionsgate, Starz, the BBC, Anime Network, Cinetic Rights Management, Current TV, Discovery, Documentary Channel, First Look Studios, IndieFlix, National Geographic and more.YouTube dominates online video viewing, but Hulu, while seeing far less visitors, is doing much better at monetizing its content (why not, it has the alien version of Alec Baldwin, after all?). YouTube's masthead will include a Shows tab, to get to... Read more...
In the super-fast world of the Internet, if a story breaks, you can expect the Wikipedia entry for that subject to be updated faster than you can blink. In the case of Tim Russert's sad death on June 13th, NBC contacted other networks and media outlets in an attempt to hold back the news long enough to notify his family vacationing in Italy. Before they knew it, however, it was already updated on Wikipedia. On Wikipedia, Mr. Russert’s page was updated at 3:01 p.m. — adding the date of death and turning present-tense verbs into the past tense almost 40 minutes before the NBC announcement. The entry... Read more...
While some reports seem to point to NBC returning to iTunes, that seems unlikely, as the Zune Marketplace, along with the changes to the Zune 2.5 software, has added NBC to the fold.Notable in the deal is NBC Universal's inclusion, as the company's programs disappeared from Apple's iTunes Store in December following disputes over pricing and bundling. "Partnering with Zune will allow us to develop innovative content offerings for their customers, including flexible pricing and packaging options beginning this fall," said JB Perrette, president of NBC Universal Digital Distribution. NBC Universal... Read more...
After a public spat concerning pricing caused Apple and NBC Universal to part ways last year, it seems that NBC might be returning to the fold.  At this time only customers in the U.K. have access to the restored content, but there is a little surprise waiting for eager fans: “Early visits to the restored content, however, reveal that NBC may have gained the upper hand in negotiating its reappearance and struck a deal for variable pricing: legacy shows cost as little as £1.19, while in-production shows sell for £1.89 [~$3.70].” It remains to be seen whether or not NBC’s apparent victory... At the Ad:Tech conference in San Francisco this week George Kliavkoff, Chief Digital Officer at NBC Universal, discussed their interest in returning to digital distribution via 3rd parties.   They didn’t name any names, but it seems clear that they were talking about Apple because they already distribute digitally and via third parties, but iTunes seems to have gained a lot of momentum. We know that initially Apple and NBC broke off their relationship over pricing issues, but apparently that’s not the only thing that could be impeding NBC’s return to iTunes. Here is what Kliavkoff had to say:... As with all rumors, please take the following news item with a grain of salt until we can receive official confirmation or denial from Apple or NBC Universal.NBC and Apple parted ways after negotiations broke down between the two companies last year over an alleged pricing dispute.  NBC has since explored numerous distribution options, and it seems that they might have discovered that iTunes may not have been so bad after all.“It is obvious right now that iTunes is the preferred method for consumers who want to buy digital music and video. Much of the success is being driven by the iPod family... Read more...
There hasn't been much love lost between NBC Universal and Apple, especially in the wake of the PR battle that recently took place when NBC announced they were not renewing their contract to have their programming available via iTunes after their current contract is up.  Whatever the true reason for that particular decision, it seems that the PR battle is continuing, this time with NBC Chief Exec Jeff Zucker claiming that Apple destroyed music pricing as we know/knew it."We know that Apple has destroyed the music business -- in terms of pricing -- and if we don’t take control, they’ll do the... When NBC Universal said it would not renew its deal with iTunes, Apple upped the ante by saying it would not sell any NBC shows once the new season started, so as not to "confuse" customers.  Apple said this wouldn't happen, but iTunes is selling NBC's shows for the upcoming season. Listed at iTunes on Wednesday were episodes of Chuck and Journeyman, two shows that premiered earlier this week. The reason that Journeyman and Chuck are showing up is that both shows are produced by companies other than NBC, and Apple is under contract to offer them. Based... Read more...
The recent feud between Apple and NBC Universal had it all: accusations, frustrated customers, threats, and even a new download service from NBC Universal.  While it is fairly clear what customers think of the drama where do other broadcasters stand? We reported earlier that FOX is either content or playing their cards really close to their chest, but what about CBS?  They also seem content to stick around:CBS Chief Executive Officer Les Moonves said that his company would be staying out of the battle with Apple. "We like our relationship with iTunes," he said.Moonves said that iTunes wasn't a significant... Read more...
