Just weeks away from the rumored public debut of AMD's new ATI Radeon 4000-series GPUs, AMD clues us in on a tantalizing tidbit about a key technology found in its next generation graphics cards. AMD's new lineup of graphics cards will not only use Graphics Double Data Rate 5 (GDDR5) memory, but AMD also claims that this will actually be "the first commercial implementation" of the technology. "Today's GPU performance is limited by the rate at which data can be moved on and off the graphics chip, which in turn is limited by the memory interface width and die size. The higher data... CORSAIR DOMINATOR HITS 2462MHz SETS MEMORY FREQUENCY WORLD RECORD Fremont, CA, May 20, 2008 – Corsair, a worldwide leader in high performance computer and flash memory products, announced today that Corsair Labs has set the world record for the highest achieved DDR3 frequency. Verified and validated by CPU-Z, Corsair Labs achieved an astounding speed of 2462MHz at CL=9 with a single-rank 1GB module. This new world record eclipses all previous CPU-Z validated memory benchmarks.  This record was set using Corsair’s award winning DOMINATOR DDR3 memory module paired with an Asus P5E3 Premium motherboard... As if on cue after HotHardware's News Item about the future of solid state memory, USA Today has a article today about the plentiful supply of flash memory chips, and how that oversupply is putting downward pressure on prices. Some are even being sold at a loss to shed supply. Memory bargain hunters, start your engines. Some wholesale flash prices tumbled 22% in the first quarter from the previous quarter, Semico Research says. That's bad news for companies that manufacture flash, including Samsung, Toshiba and Hynix (formerly a division of Hyundai). But it lowers the cost of making everything from... Read more...
Your computer memory is magnetic affair of one sort or another. (We're assuming you've stopped using Punch Cards by now)Your processor is an electrical festival. The two have developed into a very powerful computing/storage machine indeed, but they have essentially always run on two separate tracks, one relying on the other to handle any increased capacity. Now researchers at the University of  Copenhagen have come up with a way to blur the line and combine electricity and magnetism into a new transistor concept. Jonas Hauptmann, PhD student, has carried out the experiments under supervision... Read more...
In advance of CeBit, Kingston has created a video which shows soon to be released Kingston Technology DDR3 memory modules overclocked to an impressive 2.133GHz.  The memory, which is yet to be officially announced, will be in the HyperX DDR3 family and it will be rated for operation at PC3-16000 speeds. Kingston DDR3 Demo @ 2.133GHz Perhaps just as interesting as the memory is the motherboard Kingston uses for the overclocking demo.  That looks like an NVIDIA nForce reference BIOS to us, complete with a reference to EPP 2.0 (Enhanced Performance Profiles).  But... A few months ago, we rounded up some of the fastest DDR3 memory kits that were available and came away impressed by how well frequencies and performance had scaled in the short time since DDR3 had been introduced on the desktop.  Since that article was published, however, not much has changed on the DDR3 front in terms of overall performance.  1800MHz kits are still the cream of the crop and the latency of the top kits hasn’t dropped below CAS 7.  The landscape has changed a bit though, thanks to ever dropping prices, maturity, and some newly introduced features. At the time our... Read more...
Solid-state memory is the future. Micron and Intel, working together, have brought us closer to that future with the announcement of  a new flash  memory architecture that more than doubles both read and write speeds for solid-state memory devices.IM Flash Technologies, a joint venture between Intel and Micron, has developed an 8G-bit SLC (single-level cell) high-speed NAND chip which can reach read speeds up to 200M bytes per second and write speeds of up to 100M bytes per second, which could mean faster data transfer between devices like solid-state drives and video cards."With the... It's not the first GDDR5 chip made, but Samsung claims it's the fastest.Samsung claims to have invented the world's fastest graphics memory, capable of transferring data at 6Gb/sec.The series five, graphics double-data-rate (GDDR5) chips are more than four times faster than those found in today's consoles, according to Samsung, and will find their way into desktop PCs, notebooks and workstations. The chips will be introduced next year at a density of 512Mb (16Mb x 32), with Samsung claiming that GDDR5 will claim half of the top-end PC graphics market by 2010. The first of these chips came from... Modern PCs are inching closer and closer to having 10 GB/sec or more usable memory bandwidth, and we haven't really had any complaints about the steady increase until we heard that Rambus was working on technology that could enable 1 TB/sec of memory bandwidth. The applications for graphics cards and consoles are certainly interesting, but we think that desktop and server CPUs might also end up benefiting from such an increase.  Consider that when Intel released the P4, its theoretical memory bandwidth was 6.4 GB/sec, and that was 4 years ago.  Today's CPUs have 4 cores, and it is...
