It’s no secret that Apple’s computing lineup has simply been neglected over the years. It appears that Apple is bound and determined to improve the keyboard on its MacBook Pro system in some way, shape, or form. Exactly how remains to be seen. We've heard rumors of Apple swapping out the top row of Function keys for touch sensitive control that display icons based on the app a person is using, but that might not be all it has up its sleeve. A newly published patent application from Apple describes a MacBook keyboard that would allow users to adjust the sensitivity of the keys. Apple correctly surmises in its patent application that "certain users may prefer certain keyboards (and/or... Read more...
Apple had been keen on saying we're in the post-PC era, but that was before tablet sales took a nosedive. The company's iPad line wasn't immune from the waning interest in tablets either, and surprise-surprise, that silly post-PC chatter has quieted down. So now what? Well, apparently Apple has been working on some nifty upgrades to its MacBook line, and not just underneath the hood. The biggest feature upgrade could actually be in the keyboard.Image Source: Flickr (tobiasbischoff) Yes, we're aware of how silly that sounds, but we're not talking about an ordinary plank or even a mechanical key... Shots fired, shots fired! Microsoft took aim at Apple in a new advertisement with a snarky jingle highlighting ways in which its Surface Pro 4 tablet is better than a MacBook, the latter of which is "less useful like a hat for your cat." It's the latest in a long line of Mac versus PC commercials where Apple and Microsoft trade barbs. This latest ad draws attention to the Surface Pro 4's detachable keyboard, included stylus, and touchscreen display, all things the MacBook family lacks. There's also a subtle shout out to Windows Hello, the biometric security system Microsoft built into Windows 10,... Read more...
Apple hoped to revolutionize the thin and light category with its 12-inch MacBook in early 2015. Not everyone was convinced, however, given the notebook’s meager performance, single USB-C port that was used both for charging and expansion, and $1,299 entry point. The 2016 update didn’t move the bar much further, which is giving PC manufacturers the perfect opportunity to take shots at Apple’s premium notebook. That’s where Asus comes into play with its new ZenBook 3, which is a prime example of “Anything you can do I can better.” The ZenBook 3 measures in at just 11.9 millimeters thick, undercutting... It seems as though officials at the Maine Department of Education are finally coming to terms with something that many in the tech community have been saying for years: tablets can often be a poor substitute for full-fledged computers in the classroom, especially in higher grades. Instead of being used as educational tools to help supplement traditional classroom lessons and aide in completing assignments, iPads in the classroom are being used for gaming while at the same time serving as a poor replacement for laptops when it comes to productivity. The Auburn School Department decided to survey... Read more...
Apple views its 12-inch MacBook as "the future of the notebook," and if that's the marketing pitch, you can't go around selling the thing with old hardware, right? Of course not, though up until now that's exactly what Apple was doing. Not anymore—Apple went and updated the MacBook with Skylake processors, while also giving it longer battery life and a new rose gold option. The MacBook now rocks Intel's sixth-generation Core M processors ranging in speed from 1.1GHz to 1.3GHz, with Turbo Boost speeds of up to 3.1GHz. These chips bring burlier integrated graphics to the table that Apple says increases... Read more...
Hewlett-Packed is ready to take on Apple in regard thin and light notebook designs, and it wants to be a design leader that other OEMs aspire to emulate. It doesn't sound like a common problem, but the latest MacBook Pro issue happens enough for Apple to begin taking action. On some recent MacBook Pros, all of which feature Retina displays, a problem could arise where the anti-reflective coating wears off, or the screen delaminates. Neither result is pretty, and if you've been unfortunate enough to encounter it, there does seem to be a bit of good news breaking here. Reportedly, Apple is sending around an internal memo regarding a new Quality Program that will allow customers to replace their defective screens free-of-charge. In order to qualify,... Read more...
Microsoft really wants folks to upgrade to Windows 10, even going so far as to make the operating system free for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users during the first year of availability. And so far, the decision to make the OS free has allowed Microsoft to rack up over 100 million installs since July 29th. But Microsoft wants even more people to join the Windows 10 bandwagon, and it’s now reaching out to those with older laptops and all-in-ones that perhaps can’t handle its latest and greatest operating system. As a result, Microsoft has launched Easy Trade Up, which allows you to trade in your old... Read more...
The engineering wizards at Apple have designed a laptop that's lighter than Air...the MacBook Air, that is. It's the new MacBook (early 2015 edition), a forward-thinking laptop that measures just 11.04 inches (W) by 7.74 inches (D) by 0.14-0.52 inches (H), and weighs a mere 2.03 pounds. The super thin and light profile is what prompted Apple's clever tagline, "Light. Years ahead."At 2.38 pounds, the 11.6-inch MacBook Air is slightly heavier than the 12-inch MacBook we'll be showing you here. It's also marginally thicker at its highest point (0.68 inches), though a tad thinner where it tapers off... Read more...
We were first introduced to uber-thin ASUS ZenBook UX305 at the Intel Developer Forum last fall. Four months later, the ZenBook UX305 landed on our shores complete with an Intel Core M 5Y10 processor, 13.3-inch 1080p IPS display, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. The price of entry for ASUS’s 2.6-pounds of mobile computing goodness: $699. Today, ASUS is delivering a higher-end, “Crystal White Limited Edition” SKU of the ZenBook UX305. The newest model ditches the “old and busted” 1080p display in favor of a “new hotness” QHD+ (3200x1800) IPS display. You still get Intel HD 5300 Graphics and 8GB of RAM,... Read more...
