Belfiore has been a key evangelist for the Windows Phone platform in recent years and introduced us to the new Windows 10 Mobile operating system which is a key lynchpin in Microsoft overall Windows 10 strategy. Belfiore announced today via Facebook that he will leave Microsoft in January, heading out to sea for a global trip with his family. Given that Microsoft has already pushed Windows 10 out the door,... Read more...
When Microsoft unveiled its Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones a few weeks ago, it seemed to genuinely woo the masses. In fact, the entire event overall was quite impressive, and in a way, refreshing. While the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book were proverbial stars of the show, it could be argued that the biggest gain Microsoft may realize could come from their new Lumia flagship Windows 10 phone devices. One of the biggest features of these new phones is Continuum, which allows you to connect the phone to a dock, which then connects to a monitor and peripherals. In this configuration, a Windows 10-like... Read more...

We were fortunate enough to attend Microsoft’s Windows 10 Devices event in New York yesterday, at which the company unveiled a new line-up of products, including the innovative Surface Book, the thinner and lighter Surface Pro 4, a re-vamped Band fitness tracker and smartwatch, and a trio of Lumia-branded smartphones, the 950, 950 XL, and 550.   Microsoft CEO Satya Nadell (above) And Panos Panay Microsoft’s Panos Panay handled the bulk of the presentations, and presented the new Surface and Lumia devices, though other execs participated as well, and showed off things like Project X-Ray for... Microsoft has a big hardware unveil set for tomorrow morning and we’re eagerly awaiting to see what the company has in store. Luckily, Microsoft will be streaming the event for all to see tomorrow morning at 10 AM EST — you’ll be able to watch event online using your web browser or from the comfort of your living room on your Xbox One right here. But what exactly is Microsoft planning to announce tomorrow? Although the company hasn’t officially said what’s on the agenda, we have a pretty good idea that we’ll see the Surface Pro 4, Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, and a second generation Microsoft Band.... All eyes are going to be on Apple next month, as the company is scheduled to announce its next generation iPhone 6S/6S Plus smartphones along with new iPads (and possibly a next generation Apple TV). But attention will shift in October, as Microsoft is set to launch its Surface Pro 4 along with the long-awaited refresh to its Lumia smartphone range at the flagship level. A Surface Pro 4 is almost certainly a lock for the October event, given that the current Surface Pro 3 is over a year old, which is pretty long lifecycle in the tech industry. We don’t have much by way of leaked features or specs... Read more...
Windows 10 is shaping up to a spectacular mobile operating system release for Microsoft. With features like Continuum which allows smartphones into functioning desktops and support for ported Android and iOS apps, Microsoft is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at prospective buyers to boost its low single-digit market share in the smartphone market. Although we were saddened to hear that Windows 10 for smartphones won’t be arriving at the same time as the PC version, there is at least some solace for Lumia 640 owners. Microsoft General Manager (Scandinavian division) Ossi Korpela has confirmed... Read more...
If you’re becoming bored to death with Microsoft’s steady cavalcade of budget Lumia Windows Phone releases, you’ll be glad to know that new flagship will soon be upon us. Instead of boring us to death with low-end Snapdragon processors, 1GB of RAM, and “mere” 720p displays, Microsoft is finally on the verge of delivering a true successor to the Lumia 930. Microsoft will deliver a two-pronged assault on the high-end market with the Lumia Cityman and the Lumia Talkman, according to WMPoweruser. The Cityman will be the true flagship with a 5.7-inch QHD (2560x1440) display, octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon... Read more...
The latest builds of Windows 10 look promising and Microsoft is assuring customers that the anticipated OS is on track for a summer 2015 release. It’s enough to make you think that Microsoft has its act together. There are some caveats to Microsoft’s assurances, though, and at least some customers will consider them to be pretty big. For one thing, Microsoft’s idea of a finished Windows is going to be looser than in the past. While Windows has always received updates, it sounds like Windows 10 will be more of a ‘work in progress’ than past versions. Expect to see noteworthy features, including... Read more...
Nokia’s mobile phone woes continue, but now they are Microsoft’s woes, thanks to the company’s $7.2-billion acquisition of Nokia’s mobile phone business early last year. Microsoft recently filed a 10-Q with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that, notes Computerworld’s Gregg Keizer, suggests a loss of about 12 cents per phone. Is Microsoft planning a write-off of the Nokia acquisition? Microsoft Lumia 640“Given its recent performance, the Phone Hardware reporting unit is at an elevated risk of impairment,” the report states. “Declines in expected future cash flow, reduction in future... Windows 10 Build 10051 for phones brings with it a number of great updates, with the Spartan Web browser being the most notable, but for some, it introduced something extra: phone bricking. In response, Microsoft has posted a discussion thread at the Windows Insider site that helps fill us in on what went wrong, what's being changed in the future, and whether or not current bricked phones can be fixed. At the forefront, Microsoft believes that what caused certain devices - namely the Lumia 520 and 521 - to brick is that the data blocks being sent to the device were too large. In response,... As we’ve reported numerous times, Microsoft just can’t get over budget smartphones. While we understand the need for Microsoft to embrace the entry-level market, it seems like this is the only market that the company is interested in these days. Over 70 percent of Windows Phones out in the wild have just 512MB of memory or less, and nearly 33 percent of all Windows Phones sold are the lowly Lumia 520. And just like fans of a losing sports franchise sitting in the stands hoping that a new star comes to lead their team to a championship (or at least the playoffs), Windows Phone users are looking... Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor has a found a home in a number of smartphones that we’ve discussed over the past few months including the LG G Flex 2 and the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro. However, the Snapdragon 810 has also been dogged by reports of overheating, the first of such reports started airing in late 2014. More recently, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S6 has been the subject of much speculation with regards to its use of the Snapdragon 810. Some reports have suggested that the flagship smartphone will use a revised version of the chip that produces less heat, while Qualcomm’s most recent earnings... Read more...
