In some respects, when we think about what the capabilities of a $349 desktop system should be like, we can't help but be impressed what Asus has achieved and the overall value of the Eee Box. What's more impressive though is the Eee Box's absolutely tiny form-factor and completely miserly power consumption. The original Eee PC notebook cultivated quite an enthusiastic following in the marketplace and we think the Eee Box is likely to as well.Asus Eee Box B202 Video SpotlightOur more detailed full review can be found here.... Practical optical computing is like unicorn hunting to researchers. It promises all sorts of wonderful effects like superfast speeds and less waste heat. But messing about with photons instead of electrons posed challenges that seemed insurmountable, especially the limit on the size of the conduit needed to carry it. Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have come up with a way to at least partially overcome this hurdle by compressing light to fit inside spaces formerly thought impossible. Not only would compressed light make possible smaller optical fibers, but it could lead... Read more...

Perhaps it is just a coincidence that we're starting to hear a lot more about electric cars these days now that gas prices have hit record highs. Similar to the all-electric, high-performance Tesla Roadster that is now available the Electric Lightning GT will also be a high-performance... Read more...
Since moving to the "top of the world," everything Apple does is watched - and watched carefully.  With iPhone launches done (though iPhone shortages still of interest), some have turned their eyes toward the more mundane portion of Apple's business: the computer portion of it.  And some circuit board orders are being pointed as a possible clue of new MacBooks. The Commercial Times reported (in Chinese, but translated by Digitimes) that Apple has increased its orders of printed-circuit boards for notebooks by 20 percent, compared to last quarter.Macs are selling pretty well lately, but... Toshiba recently announced that its lightweight Portégé R500 ultraportable laptop is now available with a 128GB solid state drive (SSD). With this new, but pricey option, Toshiba claims that the Portégé R500-S5007V is now "the world's lightest laptop with a 128GB SSD and DVD SuperMulti drive." That might sound impressive upon first blush, but it's actually a rather hollow claim, as there are very few--if any--other 128GB SSD-based laptops on the market right now. But, we thought we would use this opportunity to proclaim HotHardware.com as the world's favorite tech enthusiast site among HotHardware.com... Read more...
