Is this an April Fools joke, a simple error on its part, or a massive, high-profile leak from one of Apple’s largest suppliers? We may never know, but LG Display last week issued a press release announcing its next generation of high-resolution 8K display panels. While the arrival of 8K displays is headline-grabbing in its own right, what makes this reveal so intriguing is the fact that LG managed to slip this peculiar sentence into its press release: “Apple has also announced that they will release the ‘iMac 8K’ with a super-high resolution display later this year.”LG's 8K scale (Source: LG)8K... Massive displays are everywhere you look at the Consumer Electronics Show, but I found that some of the most interesting displays at CES 2015 are small: LG Display has some slick new technology for smartphones and a prototype for car dashboards that we hope will be showing up in cars soon. Touch-sensitive sides put icons and sliders in easy reach on this LG Display phone. A smartphone with curved edges struck me as unnecessary and unwieldy – until I got a chance to check out LG Display’s 6-inch smartphone with an “active bending” plastic OLED display. Notifications, including text message, can... Read more...
LG has officially begun the process of mass producing the world's first plastic electronic paper display (EPD) that is designed to be used in eBooks. LG's EPD measures 6 inches and offers a resolution of 1024x768. This display offers a paper-like reading experience on a plastic substrate that is as slim as cell phone protection film. The film is flexible and can be bent at a range of 40 degrees from the center of the screen. LG Display's plastic EPD is just 0.7mm thick, which is 1/3 slimmer than current glass EPDs. It weighs 14g, or about 0.49 ounces. LG Display Begins Mass Production of World's... Read more...
CES 2012 is but days away at this point, and it's obvious that companies are eager to grab as much of that spotlight as possible. Take LG Display here, who is pre-announcing the world's largest OLED TV panel -- a 55" beast that'll be shown off in Las Vegas. According to the company, this panel is a significant step forward in the popularization of OLED TVs and demonstrates the effective application of AM OLED technology to larger panel sizes at a more cost efficient level. "Our objective has always been to actively define and lead emerging display technology markets," said Dr. Sang Beom Han, CEO... Read more...
Are bezel wars the next great war in HDTVs? First it was flat-screen. Then it was the race to HD. Then it was 3D. Now... bezel size? Truth be told, bezel size has been important to both companies and discerning consumers alike for some time now, and LG Display is hoping to capitalize on the demand with a new 55" panel. It's said to have the planet's narrowest bezel for a public display, with just a 5.3mm gap between individual panels when displayed alongside each other. In other words, picking up four of these would create perhaps the most intense, amazing Halo 3 experience ever in your home cinema.... Read more...
Size matters, sure, but so does power efficiency. It's becoming an increasingly important thing this day and age, with power constraints becoming all the more evident and efficiency numbers becoming just as important as diagonal inches, resolution specifications or asking price. LG Display is taking note, and this week they're unveiling a set that they're calling the world's most energy efficient. The company's 47" HD LCD panel offers up vertical single side LED backlight technology, which promises maximum brightness while consuming less electricity than other LCD TV panels over 40 inches in size... LG Display and iRiver today announced a $5 million joint venture to develop an ebook reader. Under terms of the agreement, the two companies will establish a new company tasked with OEM development, production, and sales of the new device, which will then be sold to electronics customers who are free to slap on their own label. "The joint venture is significant in that iRiver has now secured the foundation to produce more stable and competitive products," said Mr. Jae Woo Lee, CEO of iRiver. "Once our mutual technical and manufacturing abilities start producing synergies, I am confident that our... Read more...
Each and every time that we think the e-ink and e-reader market has reached its temporary peak, we're reminded yet again exactly what "temporary" means. LG Display, a giant in the monitor and HDTV arena, has just signed a cross-licensing agreement with Taiwan's Prime View International Co., and it'll be buying up $30.5 million worth of that company's bonds. Why? In order to "tap into the fast-growing electronic paper market."Surprised? You shouldn't be.  The display market has been squeezed for years, and with thinning profit margins in the LCD monitor and television segments, there's no better... Read more...
Out with the rumors, in with reality. LG Display has just announced that it will be grabbing this whole 3D revolution by the horns, and if you have any doubts, we'd say that its intentions to produce the world's first commercial launch of a 3D LCD panel with a Full HD resolution should be them to rest. In the past, we've seen both 3D HDTVs and monitors that support 1080p, but rarely have the two smashed together outside of a trade show floor. In other words, the technology was there, but no major TV maker has figured out a cost-effective way to bring 1080p 3D LCD screens to the mass market. Until... Read more...
