Valve founder Gabe Newell had a conversation with VentureBeat recently in which the company CEO dropped some rather odd predictions concerning the future of the PC market. Newell took time out of his busy day spent rolling around naked on heaps of money and thinking of things to do besides Half Life: Episode 3 to share his opinion on Windows 8. Here's the exchange as recorded by VB reporter Dean Takahashi: Q:What are some of the projects you’re working on? A: [W]e’re trying to make sure that Linux thrives. Our perception is that one of the big problems holding Linux back is the absence... Read more...
Last Thursday, Valve released "The Passing," a much-anticipated update to its popular Left 4 Dead series that features the protagonists of the original L4D meeting up with the Left 4 Dead: The Next Generation cast. In addition, the DLC promised new weekly "Mutations," new co-operative modes of play, and an as-yet unidentified bug that crashes the game on any GeForce GTX 400-series product. We're assuming this last is not a hidden feature. Google for "L4D2 197.41," the latter being the latest set of GeForce drivers and the only set, including beta versions, that supports the GTX 400 series, and... Read more...
It's not often that we cover software titles specifically here at HotHardware, but the Left 4 Dead series isn't your average software title. We use it religiously when testing out the latest desktop rigs, and in our down time, we spend way too many hours blasting through the undead in an attempt to hit that next level. Valve has today announced yet another reason to crank up the title if you've been letting it collect dust: The Passing. It's a new add-on that aims to "bring L4D1 survivors down south," and it'll be released tomorrow exclusive for the Xbox 360 console and the PC. It also introduces... Read more...
Ah, Christmas. The word itself conjures images of hearth and home, inspires (occasionally debaucherous) celebration, and is a time of spiritual contemplation for millions. In this crazy modern age, it's also a time when the bewildered parents of tech-savvy children all over the civilized world, regardless of race, ethnicity, religious background, or nationality are united through the magic of a single shared emotion—panic. From October to December, the advertising departments of a thousand companies exhort children to beg, cajole, and guilt-trip their parents for all manner of inappropriate digital... Read more...
Fans of the popular and highly addictive Left 4 Dead (I include myself in that group), will be excited to hear that Valve has just announced Left 4 Dead 2. In addition to new characters, zombies, and special infected, L4D2 will introduce melee combat weapons like a chainsaw, frying pan, or baseball bat (among others), and a new AI director that will dynamically adjust level layout, weather, lighting, and other objects in the game world. We've got a teaser trailed posted below, along with a summary of the game's setting, features, and expected availability. I know what I'll be doing November 17...... Read more...
