Valve has been making a concerted effort towards promoting Linux as a viable gaming platform, in part because it still fears Microsoft may eventually take a walled garden approach to Windows. Whether or not that fear is founded, it's full Steam ahead into open source territory, with the latest achievement toward that end being the release of the Left 4 Dead 2 beta for Linux. One of the prevailing theories as to why Linux isn't more widely adopted is because of games support. Sure, you can play games on Linux systems, and a good many of them when you factor in WINE and the such, but Windows is still more widely supported. Regardless of that being the case, Valve says it's able to get Left 4 Dead 2 to run faster on Ubuntu than on a Windows 7 system. It's not often that we cover software titles specifically here at HotHardware, but the Left 4 Dead series isn't your average software title.
