Little by little, Google is giving the U.S. a major boost in broadband speed through Google Fiber, its fiber optic-based Internet service that delivers 1Gbps (1,000Mbps) speeds to consumers and businesses in select territories. Suburb by suburb, the area surrounding Kansas City, Mo. is lighting up with gigabit Internet, thanks to the Google Fiber project. Downtown Kansas City has been enjoying super-fast Internet connectivity for a while, now, but many suburbs are still waiting to be lit up. Google is preparing to launch its fiber network in Kansas City next week. According to a special page that announces the target launch date, Kansas City residents can expect the service to launch on July 26. The fiber network will offer 1 gigabit per second fiber-based broadband connectivity. Although Google hasn't provided many additional details surrounding the launch, interested users can go to google.com/fiber and sign up to be notified when additional information is available. Midwest livin’ has never been so good. In addition to a cost of living that would make any east- or west-coaster faint with jealousy, Kansas City was the lucky winner of the Google Fiber sweepstakes. KC was the first city to test out Google’s 1Gbps network, the fastest Internet service available. Google, with its constant Manifest Destiny-like expansion into more tech territories, has surely been looking to add services to its Internet offering relating to its Google TV; now, it appears that the search giant has indeed taken a step in that direction.
