It's not as though the tablet market is starving for platforms, and while it's an uphill battle trying to take on established competitors like Android and iOS, Finnish smartphone startup Jolla will give it the ol' college try. Meet the "Jolla Tablet," a hardware device built around the company's open source Sailfish OS, which is one of several reasons why it's so intriguing. Billed as the world's first crowdsourced tablet, Jolla surpassed its funding goal of $380,000 on Indiegogo within a mere two hours. The tally currently sits at over $580,000 after a single day with 21 days left to go, an indicator... Read more...
The launch of the Jolla smartphone, the brainchild of former Nokia employees who wanted to see the Meego OS live on even after Nokia went all-in with Windows Phone, is nigh. The phone launches today in Helsinki, and although the initial launch is limited to the first 450 people who pre-ordered, it’s still a noteworthy event. This fate of the OS formerly known as Meego was in jeopardy when Nokia launched and then immediately discontinued the N9, which was the only phone to run the OS. Then, Intel and Samsung got together and created a new OS based on Meego called Tizen. In the meantime, a... Read more...
Did you find yourself tossing and turning all night long wishing the mobile market had another operating system to choose from? Get ready to make room for one more mobile OS; Finland’s Jolla announced that it will unveil its Sailfish OS on November 21-22 at the Slush conference in Helsinki. Don’t expect much in the way of hardware, mind you, but the company will show off the UI and talk shop about the SDK and application ecosystem. The company is indeed making hardware, too, and more information on that will be available later this year, along with important details such as a launch date; it looks for now that spring 2013 is the target date. So where did this Sailfish OS come from? It’s based in part on... Read more...
Remember MeeGo? It was all set to be Nokia's next major smartphone push, and it was in the N9, but it was short-lived due to Windows Phone swooping in, stealing all of the glory, and effectively dashing MeeGo's hope of a real future. After all -- Nokia doesn't have the time, interest or resources to focus on two platforms. It's Windows Phone or nothing at this point, but what about those loyal N9 owners, and moreover, those who genuinely like what MeeGo has to offer? Well, there's hope, and hope goes by "Jolla" in this particular case. The Finnish smartphone "product company" is setting out to... Read more...
