Nintendo has had to face the unusual problem of thrown (accidentally, for the most part) remotes with its Wii system. Symantec estimates that computer hijackings have risen 30% in the last year. Crackers hijack computers in order to send out spam e-mails, viruses, and other malicious software and according to further studies from Symantec, more then a third of attacks in the second half of 2006 originated from within the United States. While the number of hijackings continues to increase, research indicates that the number of servers controlling 'bot networks' is decreasing. As of Jan. 30, customers who buy full retail copies of Vista and Office 2007 will get unlimited calls, e-mails and Web chats with Microsoft technical support during the first 90 days after activating the software. Toshiba announced at the CES that they've made a triple-stacked HD-DVD read-only disc that can hold more ones and zeros than a standard Blu-Ray disc --51 gigabytes. That's a lot of 1080p hi-def goodness: The new disc shares the same disc structure as standard DVD and previously announced HD DVD formats: two 0.6-mm thick discs bonded back-to-back. According to Toshiba, the added cost to produce discs with the third layer is minimal, thanks to the use of the same physical disc structure as DVD. Digitimes is reporting that a batch of about NT$20 million (US$306,000) worth of DDR chips from Hynix Semiconductor was stolen yesterday in Taoyuan, Taiwan. "The 20 boxes filled with DDR chips were robbed while in transit, with sources saying most of the chips were 400MHz frequency parts. This DDR chips were being delivered to distributors, though ownership of the chips is still unknown." Luckily, the shipment was small enough that DDR prices didn't spike after the news broke.... Today Microsoft has announced that Peter Jackson, director of Kong and the Lord of the Rings series, is planning a unique Xbox Live project. Mr. Jackson feels that technology has now progressed to a point where we can properly blend the art of story telling, with interactive entertainment.
