The mobile industry is pushing out increasingly good service plan deals for consumers, and Boost Mobile won’t be left behind. The no-contract MVNO announced its “Monthly Unlimited Select” plans which offer customers unlimited talk, text, and (certain types of) data on any phone in the Boost Mobile portfolio, including the new Samsung Galaxy S5, which is coming to the service on May 19th, as well as the iPhone 5S and 5C and Motorola Moto G. Samsung Galaxy S5 There are three tiers, and all three offer unlimited talk and text, but they offer different amounts of high-speed data.... Read more...
When December starts winding down, Google offers up a roundup of the year’s top search terms in its Year-End Zeitgeist report. It’s an annual look at the people, events, and humorous miscellany that captured the world’s attention. Topping the list this year was Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa and global beacon of strength and peace who passed away recently. The Boston Marathon tragedy was #6, and the mysterious North Korea, always a baffling and intriguing topic for Westerners, slid in at #10. The deaths of celebrities Paul Walker (#2) and Cory Monteith (#4)... Read more...
These days, premier smartphones usually cost a good bit of cash even on contract, but it appears that the Google Nexus 5 can be had for as little as $49 on contract from Sprint. According to a listing on Amazon, prices for the Sprint version of the phone range from $49 to $449.99, and at least one rater said that he got the $49 option. Deals can certainly be funky on Amazon--for example, that $449.99 price tag is absurd because you can buy a Nexus 5 outright from Google for just $349--so take it all with a grain of salt, but fifty bucks is a great deal for the Nexus 5. In our own performance preview,... Read more...
Apple’s new flagship handset, the iPhone 5S, may be experiencing the occasional Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), but the new and less expensive iPhone 5C may be experiencing some death of its own. According to the Wall Street Journal’s sources, Apple has told its two suppliers (Pegatron and Foxconn) that it is reducing orders for Q4 2013, which points to weaker-than-expected sales. Orders for Pegatron were reportedly cut by about 20%, while those for Foxconn were around 30%. It’s not terribly surprising that the iPhone 5C isn’t doing all that well. From the very first rumor,... The iPhone 5c is little more than a repackaged iPhone 5; the internals are essentially the same as those found in last year's flagship, while the rear is constructed from plastic instead of aluminum. The iPhone 5s, on the other hand, cements a consistent pattern for Apple. The company has shown no intentions of reinventing the wheel (or, the phone) every year. Instead, they seem content doing so every other year, with the in-between years offering up an enhanced "s" version of last year's phone to tide consumers over.  It's almost akin to Intel's "Tick-Tock" manufacturing model actually, though... For a time, Apple's annual tradition involved the unveiling of a new iPhone at WWDC. Then, things changed, and the iPhone's annual coming-out party began to happen a lot closer to the all-important holiday shopping season. But perhaps the most interesting change of late is how the iPhone line is evolving. At this year's gala, two new iPhone handsets were unveiled, marking the first event where more than a single new device was given the spotlight. The first weekend that they were available, Apple saw record sales, proving that the fire is still burning bright within their customer base. The iPhone... Read more...
The HTC One is a nice-looking phone (our review here), and it’s shown up in black, red, blue, and sexy silver, but now HTC’s flagship phone may be donning a more audacious gown. According to leaked photos from Sina Weibo (it’s behind a login screen), there may be a gold-colored HTC One in the works, as well. Yes, gold, just like the gold-colored iPhone 5S that Conan O’Brien openly mocked (Gold is best! Best! Best! Best!), which means that if the leaked photos are accurate, at least two flagship smartphones will be available in the color of kings. Credit: Sina Weibo via PhoneDog... Read more...
When Apple announced its new iPhones and produced a gold-colored version of the iPhone 5S, We were pretty sure we weren’t the only ones who cringed. Gold? Really? We’re going to have to see people walking around with gold-colored iPhones, pretending to be rich and classy from now on? (It’s a virtual certainty, for instance, that the entire Kardashian family will have them the moment they become available.) Conan O’Brien apparently found the humor in the gold iPhone, and he took a jab at the thing on his show with this video: “Yeah, gold is best,” said fake Apple... Read more...
Although it went unmentioned in yesterday’s Apple hoopla, there’s reportedly an Apple TV software update coming from Cupertino, and it will land the same day as iOS 7, on September 18th. Of all of Apple’s products, Apple TV probably gets the least attention, but according to AllThingsD, this update will bring with it some choice features, in particular a new trick for AirPlay that will allow users of Apple TV to play content they’ve purchased via iTunes on someone else’s Apple TV. However, it’s likely that more Apple TV changes are coming; for one thing, the... Read more...
What’s going on with Apple? Earlier this week, a rumor broke that Apple had to push back the release of its 2nd-generation iPad Mini to as late as next year--production allegedly won’t even begin until Q4 2013--and now, it seems that the company will have to push back the release of the iPhone 5S, too. That’s far later than originally expected; at one point, some believed that the iPhone 5S and the much-rumored cheaper iPhone would debut this summer; other estimates had the iPhone 5S pegged as early this autumn. Regardless, the last smartphone that Apple produced, the iPhone 5,... Read more...
The Apple rumor mill is at full bore today, and the latest rumor surrounds Apple’s upcoming iPhones. According to Digitimes, industry sources in the supply chain (from Taiwan) indicate that a pair of new Apple phones are in the offing for 2013. Apple has reportedly told its supply chain partners to prepare for about 20 million units a month. One of the handsets will be a version of the iPhone 5 (likely the iPhone 5S), and the other will be a lower-cost model that more closely resembles the iPhone 4S in terms of hardware, although its display and processor will be less impressive. The handsets... Read more...
We’ve heard rumors already that Apple will debut a less expensive iPhone this summer, but today another analyst chimed in with another spin of the rumor mill and further details. According to Topeka Capital Brian White (via SFGate), who has been chatting up supply chain sources on a visit to China, the cheaper iPhone is indeed coming. "At the China trade show, we had the opportunity to interact with various suppliers and vendors, including those working with Apple," he said in a note to investors. "Our general takeaway around Apple is that a lower-priced iPhone and the iPhone 5S will be announced... Read more...
According to Apple Insider, analyst Amit Daryanani of RBC Capital Markets believes that the rumors that Apple is planning a cheaper iPhone to compete in more price tiers of the mobile market are true. The word comes from (where else?) sources in Apple’s supply chain, and the time frame for the launch of a less expensive iPhone as well as the upcoming iPhone 5S (or whatever Apple will call it) will be sometime in June or July. A ballpark estimate on the cost is anyone’s guess, but it should be at least below $400. This, but not as good While we’d agree that Apple definitely would... Read more...
