Something smells rotten in Cupertino, and we're pretty sure it's coming from Apple. Following a raft of complaints from iOS device owners over poor battery life when running iOS 5, Apple responded with an update -- iOS 5.0.1 -- that was supposed to address the issue, and according to Apple, it did solve the problem for most users. Forum complaints suggest otherwise, as we reported here, and now Apple is halfheartedly acknowledging that there might still be an issue. "The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 device," Apple... Read more...
Been holding out for an unlocked iPhone 4S in the States? It's here! Apple recently started selling completely unlocked iPhone 4S handsets on their Web site, giving those who managed to cling tight to their funds a chance to buy an iPhone 4S off-contract and with no carrier lock involved. If you aren't familiar with unlocked phones, the unlocked iPhone 4S is a GSM handset that has no software or hardware ties to AT&T (the only GSM carrier in America to offer the phone). In other words, you pay a full, unsubsidized price for the phone, and then you can use any Micro-SIM worldwide, without having... Read more...
Apple yesterday rolled out its iOS 5.0.1 software update which, among other things, was supposed to stomp out a bug that causes iPhones and other iOS devices to lose battery life faster than they should. It also added things like multitasking gestures for the original iPad, better voice recognition for Australian users, and got rid of another bug with Documents in the Cloud, but it was the battery drain issue users were most looking forward to having resolved. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear the update did any good. Those affected by the bug -- and not everyone is -- took to Apple's support forum... Read more...
Developers have access to a new beta version of iOS 5 -- version 5.0.1 -- that's supposed to fix battery life issues reportedly plaguing some iPhone and iPod touch users who installed Apple's latest and greatest mobile OS. iPhone 4S owners have been particularly vocal in voicing concerns that their shiny new smartphone is giving up the ghost well before their previous iPhone device used to, even though their usage habits are the same (we haven't run into this issue ourselves). What gives? According to the release notes, Apple discovered and fixed a bug affecting battery life. What exactly that... Read more...
AT&T is no longer the only wireless carrier selling Apple's iPhone device, but the company is quick to let everyone know it still has a leg up on the competition in downloads speeds. The iPhone 4S supports AT&T's HSPA+ network, and even though your chances of hitting theoretical maximum downlink speeds of 14.4Mpbs are nil, it's proving to be a selling point nonetheless. As one user in the video below states, "There service is faster than the others, I've heard." "It’s no surprise that customers are clamoring for iPhone 4S and they want it to run on a network that lets them download... Read more...
Having trouble with your "virtual personal assistant," as Apple likes to refer to its Siri voice recognition software? You're not alone. Here we are three days after the iPhone 4S launch and users are still taking to Twitter and Apple's support forum to voice their frustration that Siri is experiencing network connectivity quirks. It's been an intermittent problem on our end as well, and it's been really frustrating trying to play with an awesome toy that doesn't always want to play back. And let there be no mistake, Siri lives up to its billing as an awesome piece of technology, albeit only when... Read more...
Cooling their jets? No way. While pundits were quick to declare Apple's iPhone 4S as nothing more than a rehashed iPhone 4 with a few new tricks, the general populace hardly sees it that way. While the company has sold 1+ million phones on opening weekends before, they've never moved this many. After a weekend's worth of sales, Apple announced that 4 million of their new 4S phones were sold. Yes. 4 Million. With an "M." That's more than a little crazy when you consider the realities surrounding this launch. It took well over a year to get the 4S onto shelves, and just about everyone following Apple... Read more...
If you're just now getting around to pre-ordering an iPhone 4S device, get ready for a dose of the backorder blues. Getting an iPhone 4S on day of delivery is going to be tough for anyone that hasn't already laid claim to Apple's next generation smartphone, which is only mildly surprising given the disappointment that Apple didn't announce an iPhone 5 device. It doesn't matter, people are still lining up to buy the iPhone 4S. According to Apple, more than a million people flocked to its website and pre-ordered the device in the first 24 hours it was made available, far surpassing the previous record... Read more...
Is everybody over the fact that Apple didn't announce an iPhone 5? Did it not bother you in the first place? Great, let's move on, because today's the day you can put your pre-order in, assuming iOS is what floats your boat. Undecided on a wireless carrier? Well hey, if your pockets run deep enough, you don't have to have to make a commitment, provided you can hold out until November. As you go through the pre-order page, Apple reveals that unlocked iPhone 4S devices will ship out sometime next month. Pricing is a good chunk higher when you sidestep signing a two-year contract -- $649 for 16GB,... Read more...
Looking to switch carriers to get an iPhone 4S? Plenty of people have to be thinking about it, with Apple's newest upcoming smartphone to launch on Verizon Wireless, AT&T as well as Sprint (for the first time) in a week. But with VZW and AT&T enforcing tiered data plans for new customers, that leaves just one carrier with unlimited data for the iPhone 4 and 4S: Sprint. The carrier today made clear that they would offer an unlimited data pricing plan for both iPhone handsets on Sprint starting October 14th. New and existing customers can pre-order iPhone 4S beginning on Friday, October 7... Read more...
Apple is finally sharing the formalized specs on the iPhone 4S, and they confirm much of what we've suspected. The new phone looks nearly identical to the current iPhone 4, but is reportedly "all new" inside. Many analysts have speculated that the new iPhone 4S will fix the antenna issues that plagued the original iPhone 4. The phone may share the iPhone 4's brand, but the internal specs are significantly refreshed. The new iPhone 4S is nearly identical in appearance to the iPhone 4. Graphics performance is up to 7x higher than the iPhone 4 and the phone will use the dual-core A5 CPU that powers... Read more...
How did Sprint finally score the iPhone? It did so by guaranteeing to Apple that it would purchase 30.5 million iPhones over the next 4 years, amount to $20 billion worth of the handsets, at current pricing. That's just part of the story emerging on Monday, the day before the next-generation iPhone launch. Not only did Sprint buy its way into the iPhone party, it bought its way into an iPhone 5 exclusive. At least, those are the stories circulating today. The Wall Street Journal reports only on how Sprint managed to get into the iPhone threesome in the U.S. With the huge investment in the iPhone,... Read more...
And, it's confirmed. The October 4 iPhone event date that we reported earlier has been confirmed by Apple, as has the rumored location of Apple's Cupertino campus. There's no question what the star of the event will be: the event is called, "Let's Talk iPhone." Although it's expected that Apple will launch other products on October 4, in particular, it's the iPhone that will be the focus for consumers, tech gurus, and analysts. Our own source has told us that Apple had originally planned to release a minimally changed iPhone 4S in mid-summer. [The name was apparently developed to reference the... Read more...
Tangible, physical evidence seems to have emerged of the iPhone 4S, which has been rumored for months. It looks A series of images posted on Twitter show Otterbox Commuter cases that have arrived at AT&T stores. The boxes on these cases clearly have iPhone 4S on them. Otterbox is a major case manufacturer, as most smartphone owners probably know, and seemingly wouldn't make a mistake such as putting iPhone 4S on a box when they meant iPhone 4. The first images showed only the back of the cases and the case boxes. Since then, the Twitter images were posted to img.ly, and clearly show the 4S text... Read more...
