Yes Verizon, we can hear you now. And so can AT&T. Loud and clear, as a matter of fact, which is what happens when one wireless company steals market share from another in convincing fashion. And that's what Verizon did which, according to market research firmLocalytics, now accounts for a third of all iPhone 4 devices in the U.S., despite AT&T having a nearly eight-month head start. Sure, AT&T still claims the larger slice of the pie with around 68 percent, but it used to consume the whole thing and is now sharing a third with Verizon, a newcomer to the iPhone 4 party. "Why the recent... Read more...
With the iPhone 5 rumored to launch this September, analysts and users alike have turned to wondering what adjustments Apple will make to its pricing structure. Mike Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets, has stated he expects Apple to break with its established pattern where updates are concerned. To date, each successive product launch has heralded the retiring of the company's oldest iPhone model still for sale. If the company keeps to this, it'll stop offering the iPhone 3GS when it launches the iPhone 5. The iPhone 4 (16GB) would then become the entry-level iPhone at a subsidized price... Read more...
Although no one seems to know exactly when the next iPhone will be announced or released, we do know where to find a deal on the iPhone 4: Walmart. The low-cost retailer announced that it has lowered the price on Apple's iPhone 4 to $147 in its brick-and-mortar stores across the country. The price break is for a limited time only, however. The price reduction began at the beginning of this week and only applies to the 16GB iPhone 4. As with other discounted phones, you'll still be required to sign a two-year contract. The promotion is scheduled to end July 1. At that time, the 16GB iPhone 4 will... Read more...
While we wait on official word from Apple. unofficially, the App Store is now home to more than 500,000 applications for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. That's an incredible milestone, especially given Apple's often tight restrictions for what passes muster as an allowable app. That half a million figure is according to Chomp (application search engine), 148apps (iOS app news and reviews site), and Chillingo (independent games publisher and a division of Electronic Arts). The three firms put together a long infographic celebrating the App Store's ascent to 500,000 apps, as well as a bunch of... Read more...
Underscoring why Verizon Wireless made such an aggressive push to secure rights to sell Apple's iPhone, the wireless carrier today announced activation figures for the coveted smartphone, saying it turned on service for 2.2 million iPhone devices in the first quarter alone. What's more, Verizon said the iPhone 4 produced the most successful first-day sales in the company's history when it was introduced in February to existing customers. "In a period of less than eight weeks, we activated 2.2 million iPhones, and in two weeks, we activated more than 260,000 of our first 4G LTE smartphone, the HTC... Read more...
We don't know what AT&T did to lose its exclusivity grip on Apple's iPhone devices, but one thing's for sure, the wireless carrier isn't doing itself any favors by jacking up the price of early iPhone upgrades by $50. It may generate some additional revenue in the short term, but once the contract is up, does AT&T really want to give subscribers more reasons to jump ship? Starting last Sunday, AT&T subscribers have to pay an additional $50 premium for an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4G. With the $50 price hike added in, here's how the early upgrade pricing shakes out: 8GB iPhone 3GS - $299... Read more...
The iPhone 4 can make phone calls. It can track your location and upload that information to your favorite social networking site for all your family and friends to see. It can start your car remotely, fire off emails, play music and movies, and take pictures, to name just a few of things it's capable of. But when it comes to keeping tracking of time changes, well, let's just say that Apple's flagship smartphone has a tendency to have dumbphone moments. Daylight Savings took place over the weekend and, depending on where you live, you were supposed to set your clocks forward an hour. And once again,... Read more...
Few things are sure bets in life. Among them are the government will collect income taxes, the Boston Celtics will hoist banner #18 this year, and Apple's going to come out with a 64GB iPhone 4. What isn't known is when exactly Apple plans to release an iPhone 4 with double the capacity of the current 32GB top-end model, but if a new video that's making the rounds is any indication, it might be soon. Website M.I.C. Gadget (as in, "Made In China") claims to have received an engineered iPhone 4 prototype with 64GB of storage. And if your first thought is, "Fake!," the website emphatically states,... Read more...
Can there be too much of a good thing? That's probably not exactly the case with Verizon's iPhone 4, but whatever it is, lines were shorter than they usually are when Apple launches a new phone. But could anyone really be surprised? Despite being rumored for ages, you have to think that most everyone in America who desperately wanted an iPhone 4 already made the switch AT&T. The iPhone brand has been around since 2007; that's a long time to hold out, and few people actually did. The lines on Feb. 10th for the first public launch of the Verizon iPhone were very, very short around the country.... Read more...
Hitachi Maxell on Monday unveiled a wireless power transition pad and case intended for the iPhone 4. The no-fuss, cable-free battery charger has the blessing of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), an industry group tasked with wireless charging standards. On tap is the WP-PD10.BK and WP-PS10S.BK charging pads, with the former boasting enough real estate to charge two iPhone devices. Hitachi Maxell will also release the WP-SL10A.BK, which is essentially a wireless charging sleeve for the iPhone 4. The WP-PD10.BK has two power transmissions, each one capable of sending 5W of power, while the WP-PS10S.BK... Read more...
Today is the day that many AT&T users, or cellphone users in rural parts of the country that can't get decent AT&T service, have been waiting for. Now that the existing Verizon Wireless customers have had a chance to claim their iPhone 4, Walmart is giving everyone else equal opportunity starting today. Rather than flocking to the Apple or Verizon store, smart shoppers will probably head to Walmart to beat the crowds and find way more checkout opportunities. Select Walmart stores will be carrying the Verizon iPhone 4 starting today, with nearly 600 already stocked and ready to go. The 16GB... Read more...
The results of a new survey conducted last week indicate that the majority of Verizon's current Android and BlackBerry users suffer from serious iPhone envy. Of those surveyed, 54 percent said they are very likely (25 percent) or somewhat likely (29 percent) to switch to Verizon's iPhone 4 when it goes on sale on February 10. But the real question is, how many AT&T subscribers will flock to Verizon when February 10 rolls around? Of the 700 smartphone users surveyed, more than a quarter -- 26 percent -- of current AT&T customers said they see Verizon in their future. Of those, 29 percent... Read more...
Apple may be advertising the iPhone 4 as a friendly product for two friendly networks in America, but the truth of the matter is that Verizon Wireless still is no fan of AT&T, and the same is true in the opposite direction. Even since it was announced that VZW would be getting the iPhone 4, both ad departments have been working overtime. Each one is trying to point out why their iPhone 4 is better, despite the overwhelming school of thought suggesting that Verizon's iPhone 4 will be superior if you need an unlimited data plan or need a broader 3G coverage spread. But that's not stopping AT&T... Read more...
Wow, that was quick. Very quick. The Verizon iPhone is probably the most highly anticipate smartphone to ever be announced, and that probably has to do with the insane amount of hype surrounding it and the growing displeasure with AT&T. People have been looking for a way to switch over for years, and last month, Apple and Verizon announced that their opportunity was coming soon. Yesterday, VZW enabled only existing Verizon customers to pre-order the iPhone 4. That means that only current VZW customers (not those that would be switching from AT&T to Verizon) had an opportunity to place a... Read more...
