In Boston Bruins-like fashion, we have our third, yes third full performance review for the day. And that's what you call a "geek hat trick."  OCZ already offers a wide array of popular, high performance SSDs, but to the company’s credit, it’s not resting on its laurels. It seemed that every time a new controller technology emerged, OCZ was at the ready with a fresh batch of products and over time built a portfolio that targeted virtually every market segment. Consumer-class solid state storage is in an interesting phase right now, though. There was a time when there were only a couple of controllers on the market that allowed OEMs to produce drives capable of effectively saturating the SATA interface, while also offering strong all-around performance. Various unveilings in San Francisco today weren't completely overshadowed by our friends at Apple and their shiny new bauble.  OCZ Technology gave us a quick, backroom glimpse of their next generation SSD technology that is slated to launch sometime hopefully in early Q4. This latest OCZ solid state drive will be powered by the company's new Barefoot 3 controller, a ground-up design built by OCZ's Indilinx design team.  OCZ is claiming performance numbers in the area of 100,000 IOPS and sustained read/write bandwidth exceeding that of current high-end SandForce 2500 series drives. ... Back in April, we ran a pair of OCZ Vertex 4 SSDs (256GB and 512GB) through the benchmark grinder to see what they could do... Today, we’re testing another brother in the family, the 128GB OCZ Vertex 4.  When we first tested the aforementioned drives, we found that the latest generation of the Vertex series delivered somewhat uneven performance. In March of this year, OCZ announced that they had plans to acquire Indilinx. A few months have passed since the acquisition, but today the combined forces of OCZ and their recently assimilated team members from Indilinx are ready to officially unveil the OCZ Octane series of solid state drives, which are based on the new Indilinx Everest platform. Everest builds upon the previous gen Indilinx Barefoot controller, but offers a SATA 6.0Gbps interface and support for the latest NAND flash technologies, among other things. OCZ had been a strong partner of Indilinx, dating all the way back dating back to the original Vertex series of SSDs, which featured the Indilinx Barefoot controller. Due to stiff competition from Intel and SandForce, on both the price and performance fronts back then, Indilinx-based SSDs ultimately fell out of favor with enthusiasts. And when the company failed to launch a next-gen SATA 6.0Gbps capable controller on time it all but fell off the map.
