Geeksphone has been working with Mozilla on Firefox OS handsets since the operating system’s developer preview was in the works, and the company’s Peak and Keon smartphones offer solid specs and features for lower-end devices. Both run on Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, have large-enough displays, and have reasonable cameras and storage. Also, the phones are orange and white, evoking Firefox, and that’s just plain cool. Ever since it unveiled the Classmate PC several years ago, Intel has taken an interest in providing educational technology to students in the developing and developed world. The company has just announced the next phase of its efforts -- a pair of tablets that are designed to interface with sensor packages, include educational software, and are based on Android rather than Microsoft Windows. The two tablets have similar, though not exact, hardware specs. The iPhone 5 rumor mill is spinning up again after apparently taking a few weeks off due to heat exhaustion. The latest buzz coming out of Taiwan is that the device will feature a quad-core processor based on Samsung's Exynos platform. That would make the Exynos 4412 the most likely candidate for the device, and we've already seen an excellent phone built around that platform -- the Samsung Galaxy S III (although the US version we've looked at here is dual-core Qualcomm Krait). A key Microsoft kernel architect, David Probert, has come out with a surprising statement regarding Windows' ability to harness multiple cores. While Windows has taken advantage of multicore technology for over a decade, Probert notes that users rarely see the performance that they should. "Why should you ever, with all this parallel hardware, ever be waiting for your computer?" Probert asked in a presentation last week at the Universal Parallel Computing Research Center in Champaign-Urbana. Dual-core CPUs have made their way into computers across the world and with quad-core processors poised to make the same invasion, it looks like the core race is on. Interestingly, Intel notes on its roadmap that in it's 45nm Wolfdale dual-core and Yorkfield quad-core CPUs, hyper threading may make a return. Perhaps the most interesting thing about these two processors is the return of Hyper-Threading.
