Shares of Rambus are down more than 50 percent today after a jury trial on Wednesday found Micron and Hynix Semiconductor not guilty of price fixing. Rambus had sued the two manufacturers for over $12 billion, claiming that they formed “a secret and unlawful conspiracy to kill a revolutionary technology, make billions of dollars and hang onto power." “We are disappointed with this verdict as we believe strongly in our case,” Rambus Chief Executive Harold Hughes said in a statement. “We do not agree with several rulings that affected how this case was presented to the jury... The tendency of DRAM to become cheaper over time is generally considered a good thing—at least, in the consumer market—but evidence suggests prices may have fallen a bit too much. Current manufacturing costs using 40nm technology is about US $1.50 while the selling price for a 2Gb part is currently $1.17 - $1.31. This is less a problem for the top-tier RAM manufacturers who are using 30nm tech, but there's no way for smaller players to quickly migrate to the updated process. HP and Hynix. Two names we know well in the computing industry, but two that are rarely mentioned in the same sentence, at least in the world of consumerdom. But now, the two companies are joining forces in order to advance the memristor and bring it to market in next-generation memory modules. If recent technology news is any indication, Samsung has taken the concept of spending innovating one's way out of a recession and is running with the ball for all it's worth. We discussed the company's plans to move ahead with 450mm wafer production a few days ago; news today indicates the electronics manufacturer will invest $790 million into upgrading its DRAM production facilities in the second half of this year. South Korean DRAM giant Hynix has recently crafted the world’s fastest and smallest chip for cell phones and other portable devices. The Incheon-based company said that the chip is the first 1 GB mobile DRAM, built on 66nm process technology, to be commercially available in the industry. “The finer processing geometry reduces die size and improves the speed and power efficiency of the device. Digitimes is reporting that a batch of about NT$20 million (US$306,000) worth of DDR chips from Hynix Semiconductor was stolen yesterday in Taoyuan, Taiwan. "The 20 boxes filled with DDR chips were robbed while in transit, with sources saying most of the chips were 400MHz frequency parts. This DDR chips were being delivered to distributors, though ownership of the chips is still unknown." Luckily, the shipment was small enough that DDR prices didn't spike after the news broke.... These patent infringement cases seem to be everywhere these days. This is a huge one though, as Hynix has been ordered to pay Rambus $306 Million. While that's a lot of cash, Rambus could be looking at even more money from others as a result from the court ruling. "The verdict, though, could prompt Rambus to file even more lawsuits. PC makers and others who incorporated DDR into their products are potentially liable. Earlier this week, Hynix Semiconductor enveiled their new GDDR4 Graphics memory modules.  Able to process data at almost two time that of GDDR3, Hynix will be pushing graphics card manufacturers to sign on, with a mass production target of Q306.  The current model can process 11.6 Gigabytes of data in one second with 14.4GB/s being the target later in 2006.
