With zip, zero, and zilch ballyhooing from Apple, Hulu today made its premium Hulu Plus app available on Apple TV. Hulu Plus joins the likes of Netflix, YouTube, and other popular streaming services already available on Apple TV, adding the hardware device to its portfolio of supported products that include Roku, various tablets, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and more. "For those of you who are new to the service, Hulu Plus is the only online premium video subscription that streams current and classic TV programming on demand from hundreds of content partners, including top broadcast networks ABC, NBC,... The Internet is still something of a wild frontier, where everything is growing and evolving fast, but the rules are still being written and shootouts between companies are general practice. It’s grown so much that it’s gradually invading just about every other market sector, from phone service to retail and more. The TV industry is a major battleground, as online streaming video from the likes of Netflix and Hulu nibble away at cable companies’ market share and, more importantly, make people question why they’re paying so much money for cable and satellite. In an on-demand... Read more...
Couch potatoes are discovering that it doesn't make sense to keep forking over money to cable companies when they can simply stream the shows they want to watch, when they want to watch them. It's not just a handful of TV viewers cutting the cord, either. According to a research report by The Convergence Consulting Group, LTD., around 2.65 million pay TV subscribers have ditched their cable or satellite provider in favor of Web-based content since 2008. Over a million pay TV subscribers cut the cord in 2011 alone. By 2012, the research group estimates that cord cutters will reach 3.58 million large,... Read more...
There's something pretty interesting happening in the world of online programming: original content. While Hulu and Netflix were used to simply acting as an online pipe to funnel other programming through, recently they have both decided to start investing in making their own content. In other words, creating programming that can only be seen at one portal or the other. It's possible that this tactic is a method of long-term preservation; their streaming models can be replicated, but get people hooked on original content and you have something that they'll continue to pay for. This week, Hulu is... Read more...
Hulu Plus reached a new milestone at the end of 2011 with 1.5 million paying subscribers. This is pretty impressive when you consider this milestone was reached a little more than a year after the service's official launch. On the company's blog, Jason Kilar, the CEO of Hulu, noted that the number of Hulu Plus subscribers is continuing to grow extremely fast. Some of the attraction and growth of Hulu Plus can be attributed to the expanded content. In 2011, Hulu's content offering grew approximately 40% compared to the previous year. Hulu Plus’ content offering grew more than 105% in that... Read more...
If there's one thing that's abundantly clear, it's this: streaming media isn't going the way of the dodo anytime soon. Western Digital has just added thousands of new HD movies for WD TV customers, not to mention a remote control app for Apple and Android mobile devices. In other words, your WD TV remote just got shelves. The company's also adding VUDU, as well as several additional new sports and entertainment services to the WD TV Live and WD TV Live Hub media players, adding to the media player family's current content offerings from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Blockbuster, CinemaNow, Spotify, Pandora,... And, well, that's that. First off the block, then on the block, and now off again. The drama that has surrounded Hulu in recent months came to an abrupt end this past week, as the company decided to "terminate the sale process" before it was ever truly near its logical completion. The following is a joint statement from Hulu owners News Corporation, Providence Equity Partners, The Walt Disney Company and the Hulu senior management team: “Since Hulu holds a unique and compelling strategic value to each of its owners, we have terminated the sale process and look forward to working together... Love Hulu? Love your Vizio tablet? You're in for a treat. The company's 8" Tablet just got Hulu Plus support, bringing one of the Web's most popular video viewing services to a tablet that's still struggling to make a dent in the U.S. market. Anyone willing to splurge on the $7.99/month service will now be able to enjoy it on the Vizio Tablet, which can be picked up for just $299. Having Hulu Plus support enough to get this thing into the mainstream mind? Hard to say, but one thing's for sure: a $99 price tag would! Right, HP? VIZIO’s Groundbreaking 8” Tablet Launches Hulu Plus™... Read more...
No company wants a product that's returned more rapidly than it can sell them, but that's what Logitech reportedly has on its hands with the Revue. Logitech executives have stated that the Revue's revenue stream is "slightly negative," and the company has slashed prices from $249 to $99, reportedly in a bid to clear inventory (the unit is still listed at $249.99 on Logitech's homepage). We launched Revue with the expectation that it would generate significant sales growth in spite of a relatively high price point and the newness of both the smart TV category and the underlying platform,”... Hulu may well be on the auction block at this point, but that doesn't mean its current owners are slowing down on the innovation front. Just this week, the company has added four more Android smartphones to the list of Hulu Plus-enabled devices, bringing the total to 10 supported devices. And it doesn't look like they're slowing down anytime soon. Hulu Plus is now available on HTC Evo 4G, HTC ThunderBolt, HTC myTouch 4G and G2 — joining the Nexus One, Nexus S, HTC Inspire 4G, Motorola Droid II, Motorola Droid X, and the Motorola Atrix in Android Market. That's a total of ten supported phones... Read more...
Earlier this week, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar posted a blog entry on the joint venture's second quarter. Overall results were good, with Hulu Plus ramping significantly more quickly than anticipated. Kilar notes that Hulu Plus, the website's paid subscription service, "added more paying subscribers in June than we did in April and May combined." The site now expects to break the one million subscriber mark by the end of the summer as opposed to by the end of the year. These figures do not count anyone testing the one week free subscriber trial. According to Kilar, content owners currently earn approximately... Read more...
Many would argue that Apple simply has too much power. Of course, they probably earned that power, and the developer / consumer support is obviously there, but there's no question that companies take a little liberty when at the top. A few weeks ago, Apple changed their mind on subscription app rules, saying that an app could remain in the store without a link to an external site, or it could use Apple's in-app purchasing system if you feel like giving Apple a 30% cut of your earnings. Now, Hulu's getting prepared for the switchover, which occurs in just over a week. The company has subtly removed... Read more...
