We're living in a connected world, and it's only growing more inter-connected by the day. Atheros Communications is eager to be a part of that expansion, and this week they've announced their HomePlug Green PHY development kit as part of its new ‘Internet of Things’ portfolio aimed at connecting hundreds, if not thousands, of IP addressable devices in the home. We've heard the whole "Internet of things" bit before elsewhere, and it's growing into quite the meme. Using Wi-Fi and HomePlug Green PHY powerline technologies, Atheros’ portfolio will enable scalable IP infrastructures... Read more...
In general, we don't complain about upgrades or revisions. In almost every case, moving forward means bettering something for the consumer, and the HomePlug standard is one standard that we absolutely are thrilled to see moving forward. Version 1 never really caught on, largely due to high prices, lackluster reviews and a bunch of other options (Wi-Fi, for example) useful for transferring content. HomePlug has just revealed their AV2 specification, which promises to support "Gigabit-class Powerline Networking" while greatly boosting the speed at which transmissions take place. The HomePlug Powerline... Read more...
HomePlug is one of those technologies that have probably been around longer than you know, but it never really took off in a way that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi have. If you've never heard of it, it basically allows signals (usually network signals) to travel through a home's existing power network. Instead of forcing users to run long Ethernet drops or use flaky Wi-Fi, this is a happy medium solution. The HomePlug Powerline Alliance just announced that the IEEE P1901 Working Group has passed an initial sponsor ballot, which paves the way for a global standard for powerline (PLC) networking. This is exactly... Read more...
Today sure feels like launch day, as quite a few big-name companies have decided to kick March off with a bang this morning. Of course, CeBIT is getting underway in Germany, so no one should really be surprised. One of those companies is Netgear, who has decided to introduce a couple of new devices that provide a wide variety of functionality. Starting off is the High-Performance Wireless-N HD Home Theater Kit (WNHDB3004), which is designed to wirelessly play back "multiple jitter-free 1080p HD video and audio streams to every room in the house flawlessly, and at double the performance and range... Belkin's latest media streaming solution certainly isn't the first to utilize Powerline, but it's the first that we've seen in quite some while that really instills confidence. Engineered specifically to handle the high pressures of HD streaming, the Belkin Gigabit Powerline Adapters are made to handle Gigabit speeds as high as 1000Mbps, which should be plenty to pass along even the richest of content available in the home. The adapters are powered by Gigle Semiconductor’s mediaxtream chip, and for those unaware, these simply plug into seprate AC outlets within the home to pass along multiple high-def... Read more...
