Here's something you don't see every single day: an agency that advocates getting off your rear and exercising, endorsing a video game console. It's sort of like the Twilight Zone, but sure enough, the American Heart Association is actually putting their stamp of approval on Nintendo's Wii console and a number of their games (Wii Fit, for example, which coaches users in various exercises). According to the joint press release, the two companies are joining forces to "promote healthy living through active-play video games." The partnership is a new one designed to motivate consumers to "get informed,... Read more...
Can you spell "SEC investigation?"  There is definitely going to be one after this.  A post at CNN's new social news site, iReport, resulted in Apple stock plummeting this morning, when it was rumored that Steve Jobs had suffered a heart attack.  iReport allows users to post unvetted stories, which then --- after vetting, may be posted to the iReport page on CNN.com.  This story obviously didn't make it there, and has since been taken down.Interestingly, this user has never submitted a story previously.  And the time of the story posting, 6 AM PDT, was obviously very suspicious. ... Ah yes, the good news is they are collaborating. The bad news is ... wait for it ... The deal comes as BitTorrent, which became known for developing software technology widely used to illegally share files, is trying to reinvent itself. The companies are in talks to collaborate on ways to run BitTorrent's technology more smoothly on Comcast's broadband network, and allow Comcast to transport video files more effectively over its own network in the future, said Tony Warner, Comcast's chief technology officer. Comcast and BitTorrent have been at odds since the cable operator said it was delaying... Read more...
Considering that students and businesspeople have been using MP3s to study a wide variety of subjects ranging from languages to law, is it any wonder that someone came up with the idea of teaching doctors with them? "iPods are good for your heart - at least they can help doctors make the right diagnosis of the sounds they can hear. Professor Michael Barrett MD at the American College of Cardiology last year launched a project in which the sound of hearts beating were made available to students in MP3 format for their iPods." If only somebody would clue talent agents into this teaching concept so... Read more...
According to an article from Engadget, Europe and South Korea are developing a "Robot Ethics Charter" in order to govern the manufacturing and use of robots to including ethical standards. If this wasn't already sci-fi enough, guess where the a great deal of inspiration for the charter is being found? Isaac Asimov's "three principles", a concept from his 1942 book I Robot, is being used as inspiration for both Europe and S. Korea's charters. In the end, when the robots rise, it won't be a cool slathering of mud spread across your thermally... Read more...

There is no question, the year ahead in 2004, is shaping up to be a banner one for leading edge PC technology.  New features and performance abound, as new technologies such as PCI Express, DDR2 and GDDR3 find their way into the mainstream.  While the past few iterations of platform products have been more or less, "kicker" implementations of legacy technology, this year's refresh marks what could be exponential performance gains with a host of new features. Likewise, the 3D Graphics market is on a major run with NVIDIA and ATi leading the charge to real-time cinematic... Read more...
